Chapter 7 - The Secret in the Sewing Box and the Highway Ambush

The rain had turned into a torrential deluge as three black armored SUVs rolled out of the iron gates of the Bellini estate.

Mason sat in the back of the center vehicle, his laptop open, monitoring live encrypted feeds of every security node across the county.

Emma sat beside him, still wrapped in the heavy black coat, clutching her mother’s worn leather purse against her chest.

Inside that purse, zipped into a hidden lining beneath the cracked vinyl, rested the heavy brass safety deposit key Emma had carried with her since she was eighteen.

She had never traveled to Gary, Indiana, to open that box.

Her mother had made her swear on her deathbed that she would only open it if she was on the brink of starvation or running for her life.

Until tonight, Emma had believed her mother’s warnings were the tragic delusions of a woman broken by chronic illness and poverty.

Now, looking at the heavy tactical submachine gun resting between Mason’s knees, Emma realized her mother had been the only sane person in the entire world.

"How far is Gary from here?" Emma asked, her voice tight against the hum of the reinforced tires on the wet asphalt.

"Four hours if we take the interstate," Mason replied without looking up from the screen.

"Three hours if we take the state routes and run every light."

"Your uncle won't let us get there," Emma murmured, looking out into the pitch-black woods flying past the tinted window.

"He looked at me in that room like he wanted to rip my throat out."

Mason closed the laptop with a quiet click and looked at her.

"Marcus is an arrogant politician, but he is not stupid," Mason said, his voice flat.

"He knows that if the caporegimes see Chiara’s original handwriting naming him as her would-be killer, the council will execute him on the spot."

"He cannot afford to let us reach that bank vault."

Up front, Dominic was driving, his knuckles white against the steering wheel, while Luca monitored the rear mirrors with a combat shotgun across his lap.

"Boss," Luca said suddenly, his tone sharpening instantly into tactical awareness.

"We have three dark utility trucks coming up fast on the southbound lane behind us."

"No headlights."

"Running blackout mode."

Mason didn't hesitate for a single second.

"Dominic, floor it," Mason barked, reaching down to chamber a round into his automatic rifle.

"Luca, notify the lead and chase cars."

"We are in an active kill box."

The SUV surged forward, the heavy V8 engine roaring as Dominic slammed his foot against the accelerator.

The speedometer climbed past eighty, ninety, a hundred miles per hour as they blasted through the sheets of blinding rain along the empty state highway.

Suddenly, a deafening crack shattered the night air.

The rear chase car behind them swerved violently, its front left tire shredded by high-caliber armor-piercing rounds from an unseen sniper rifle.

The chase vehicle spun across three lanes of slick asphalt, slamming into the concrete divider in a terrifying plume of orange sparks and crumpling steel.

"They have an anti-materiel rifle mounted on the flatbed!" Luca shouted, ducking as a heavy slug punched a fist-sized spiderweb into the reinforced rear window.

The impact shuddered through the entire frame of the SUV, tossing Emma against the door panel.

Mason grabbed her by the collar of her coat, violently pulling her down toward the floorboards between the seats.

"Stay down!" Mason roared over the screaming wind and gunfire.

"Keep your head between your knees and do not move!"

Emma curled into a ball on the floor, her hands clasped over the back of her neck as bullets began to hammer against the armored plating like steel hail.

Through the glass, Emma saw the dark outline of a modified pickup truck pulling up alongside their passenger side.

Two men in full tactical gear leaned out of the truck’s bed, leveling automatic shotguns directly at Dominic’s window.

"Dominic, pit maneuver, now!" Mason commanded.

Dominic didn't flinch; he yanked the heavy steering wheel hard to the right, driving three tons of armored steel directly into the side panel of the attacking truck.

The sound of grinding metal was deafening, the smell of burnt rubber filling the sealed cabin.

The pickup truck lost traction on the wet shoulder, its wheels catching the muddy embankment.

It flipped violently through the air, rolling three times before bursting into a massive fireball that lit up the stormy sky like a miniature sun.

"One down!" Luca yelled, rolling down his armored side window three inches to return controlled bursts of fire toward the remaining vehicle.

The lead Bellini vehicle ahead of them suddenly slammed on its brakes, executing a coordinated tactical block.

Mason cracked his door open an inch, firing three precise shots into the engine block of the final pursuing SUV.

The attacker’s radiator erupted in a cloud of blinding white steam, the vehicle skidding sideways across the asphalt and coming to a dead stop in the median.

"Clear! Push through, Dominic, do not stop for anything!" Mason ordered, slamming his door shut and wiping rain and soot from his eyes.

Dominic gunned the engine again, navigating around the smoking wreckage and accelerating into the dark expanse of the open highway.

Inside the SUV, the only sound was the heavy, ragged breathing of the four passengers and the rhythmic thump of the windshield wipers.

Mason looked down at the floorboards where Emma was still curled tightly, her body trembling with pure shock.

He reached down, his large, scarred hand gently gripping her shoulder.

"Emma," Mason said softly, his voice devoid of its usual lethal edge.

"It’s over."

"They’re neutralized."

Emma slowly lifted her head, her face pale, her lips trembling, but her hazel eyes wide with a terrifying realization.

"He tried to kill us," Emma whispered, her voice cracking.

"He really tried to kill us on an open highway."

"Now you understand," Mason said, pulling her back up onto the leather seat.

"Your mother wasn't hiding from a ghost, Emma."

"She was hiding from a monster who will burn down the world before he gives up his throne."

Emma looked down at the rusted brass key clutched in her bleeding fingers.

The fear that had paralyzed her all night suddenly hardened into cold, crystalline determination.

May you like

"Then step on the gas, Dominic," Emma said, wiping blood from a minor scrape on her cheek.

"Because I want to see what my mother left behind to destroy that bastard."
