Chapter 8 - “The Confrontation at the Penthouse”

The rain returned by evening, washing down the towering glass windows of the Bellmont penthouse suite with a steady, relentless fury.

Inside, the lights remained turned off, casting long, dark shadows across the luxurious living room where Ethan stood by the window, staring out at the sparkling lights of the Chicago skyline.

The heavy oak door unlocked with a sharp click.

Footsteps echoed across the marble foyer—heavy, uneven, and desperate.

Richard Bellmont walked into the dark penthouse, his suit jacket unbuttoned, his tie loosened, and his face carved with the bitter lines of absolute defeat.

“You think you've won, don't you?” Richard's voice rasped through the empty room, carrying a dark, hollow echo.

Ethan didn't turn around immediately.

He slowly set down his coffee mug on the windowsill and turned to face his father.

In the dim light, the resemblance between the two men was uncanny—the same sharp jawline, the same piercing eyes, the same unyielding posture.

“This isn't about winning, Dad,” Ethan said quietly. “This is about truth.”

“Truth?” Richard let out a harsh, broken laugh, stepping closer into the room. “You think destroying the family empire is the truth? You think handing our legacy over to federal investigators and letting the tabloids tear our name apart is going to bring you peace?”

“It brings me clarity,” Ethan replied, his voice steady and cold. “For twenty-nine years, I lived in a gilded cage you built out of lies. You told me my mother was dead. You told me love was a weakness. You turned my entire life into a transaction designed to protect your ego and your bank account.”

Richard's face twisted in fury.

“I gave you everything!” Richard shouted, stepping right up to Ethan. “You wore the best clothes, you attended the finest universities, you sat at the head of a multi-billion-dollar corporation! Without me, you would be nobody living in a rundown apartment in the industrial slums!”

Ethan didn't flinch.

He looked down at his father with a gaze so calm and unyielding that it stopped Richard in his tracks.

“And without your money, my mother would have raised her son with love, honesty, and dignity,” Ethan replied softly. “You didn't give me everything, Dad. You robbed me of a mother, and you robbed her of a child.”

Richard staggered back a half-step, the sheer weight of his decades-long deception finally crashing down upon his shoulders.

The fight drained out of him instantly, leaving behind an old, tired man whose world had completely collapsed.

“She... she was just supposed to take the money and vanish,” Richard whispered, his voice cracking for the first time in his life. “It was supposed to be a clean break.”

“Nothing built on stolen lives is ever clean,” Ethan said, turning his back on his father to look back out at the rainy Chicago skyline. “The board has accepted your resignation. The federal investigation is underway. And tomorrow morning, Anna Miller is coming to this penthouse as my guest.”

Richard went completely rigid.

“You're bringing her here? Into my home?”

“Into our home,” Ethan corrected smoothly. “Get your things, Dad. Your legacy is gone.”
