Chapter 2 - The Amended Legacy

The sharp click of the leather folder’s brass lock echoed through the silent foyer like the cocking of a pistol, freezing everyone in their tracks.
Daniel took a frantic step toward the attorney, his hand reaching out to grab the edge of the document folder, but Richard Hayes sidestepped with practiced agility.
"Don't touch federal legal documents, Daniel," the attorney warned, his voice carrying a chilling authority that made even the younger Carter heir freeze. "Unless you want to add felony obstruction to the list of civil liabilities you're already inheriting."
"You're acting on misinformation," Daniel stammered, his polished corporate facade completely dissolving into frantic desperation. "Dad was medicated. He was under heavy palliative care during his final days; whatever he signed three days ago is legally invalid due to diminished capacity."
"I had two independent neuropsychiatrists present during the signing, alongside a licensed state magistrate," Richard Hayes countered smoothly, pulling a crisp, multi-page document from the folder. "Your father’s mind was sharper in his final week than it had been in years—sharp enough, it turns out, to review financial audits spanning back twenty-five years."
Emily stared at the attorney, her mind racing as she tried to piece together the sudden, violent shift in the room's atmosphere.
"What audits?" Emily asked, her voice tight with suspense. "What did my father find out?"
Mr. Hayes glanced down at the first page of the amended will, his eyes scanning the dense legal text before looking back up at Emily with a look of profound pity.
"Your father discovered that the Carter Logistics empire—the very foundation of this estate and every asset your family owns—was never legally his to distribute entirely as he pleased," the attorney stated, every word dropping like lead weights onto the marble floor.
Margaret let out a sharp gasp, pressing a trembling hand against her mouth as her face drained of all remaining color.
"That's a lie," Margaret choked out, her voice losing its previous aristocratic polish. "Richard built Carter Logistics from the ground up with his own hands after his first wife passed away."
"That is the narrative your father maintained publicly for thirty years, yes," Mr. Hayes replied calmly, turning a page. "However, the original capitalization of Carter Logistics came entirely through a hidden trust established by Emily’s maternal family—a trust that was mysteriously liquidated and transferred thirty-one years ago under suspicious legal pretenses."
Emily’s breath caught in her throat, her eyes widening as the pieces of a puzzle she never knew existed began violently slamming together in her mind.
"My mother's family?" Emily whispered, her voice trembling. "My mother died in a car accident when I was a toddler. Grandfather left everything to Dad to manage until I came of age."
"Your mother's family estate didn't vanish in an accident, Emily," Mr. Hayes said softly, lifting a specific certified document from the back of the folder. "And your father didn't inherit your mother's fortune through standard probate."
Daniel lunged forward again, this time managing to knock the corner of the folder, causing several loose papers to flutter down onto the polished marble floor.
"Shut your mouth, old man!" Daniel shouted, losing all semblance of professional decorum as he dropped to his knees to scoop up the scattered pages before Emily could read them.
"Leave them, Daniel!" Emily commanded, dropping her suitcase with a loud thud and diving toward a single sheet of paper that had landed near her boots.
She snatched the paper off the floor before her brother could grab it, her eyes scanning the typed lines under the harsh light of the chandelier.
It was a certified bank ledger from 1995, detailing a multi-million-dollar wire transfer routed through an offshore account bearing Margaret’s maiden name.
Emily slowly rose to her feet, her gaze shifting from the paper to her stepmother’s terrified face.
"You didn't just step into this family after my mother died," Emily whispered, the horror dawning on her with crushing weight. "You were already here. You and Dad... you engineered my mother's disappearance."
"That is complete insanity!" Margaret shrieked, stepping back until her spine hit the heavy oak stairs. "Your mother abandoned this family because she was unstable! Everyone in high society knew she suffered from severe psychological delusions!"
"She wasn't unstable," Richard Hayes interjected, reading directly from the legal addendum in his hands. "According to the final testimony Richard Carter recorded on audio file three days before his death, Margaret and Daniel conspired to forge your mother's signature on a relinquishment of rights, forcing her out of the estate while your father turned a blind eye to protect his corporate reputation."
Daniel slowly stood up from the floor, clutching the papers he had managed to salvage, his face twisted into an ugly, sneering mask.
"And what if we did?" Daniel spat, dropping the pretense of innocence entirely as the mask slipped off his face. "The old man is dead in the ground. Whatever audio file or modified will you think you have doesn't change the reality of who controls the corporate board votes right now."

"Actually, Daniel, it changes everything," a new, deep voice echoed from the open front doorway.
Everyone froze, their heads snapping toward the entrance as a tall, imposing figure stepped out of the receding shadows of the night.
