Chapter 9 - The Handcuffs of Justice

The sharp, metallic click of steel handcuffs locking around Daniel’s wrists echoed loudly through the cavernous marble foyer, shattering the last illusion of the Carter family's untouchable legacy.

"This is illegal! You can't do this!" Daniel yelled, his face pressed against the polished marble floor as a state trooper hauled him roughly to his feet. "We have high-priced lawyers! We own half the commercial real estate in this city!"

"You owned nothing, Daniel," Victor Sterling stated coldly, stepping forward to stand beside Emily as the younger Carter brother was dragged toward the open front doors. "You were just living off the interest of stolen capital, and the account balance has finally reached zero."

Margaret didn't even attempt to fight back as the second trooper stepped toward her.

Her immaculate blonde hair was slightly disheveled, her pearl earrings catching the harsh flashing red and blue light from the police cruisers parked outside.

She stared at Emily with a look of pure, unadulterated hatred that sent a final shiver down Emily's spine.

"You think winning this house makes you strong," Margaret whispered bitterly as the cold steel cuffs were fastened around her delicate wrists. "You'll find out very quickly that the empire your father built is infested with debts and enemies far worse than us."

"Let them come," Emily replied without flinching, her voice steady and unyielding. "Unlike you, I didn't build my foundation on lies and stolen lives."

Without another word, the troopers escorted Margaret and Daniel out through the heavy oak doors, their figures silhouetted against the flashing emergency lights before disappearing into the damp night air.

The heavy front doors swung shut behind them, sealing off the outside world and plunging the foyer back into a quiet, heavy stillness.

Richard Hayes let out a long, exhausted breath, lowering his leather folder onto the console table as he wiped a bead of sweat from his forehead.

"It is finally done," the aging attorney murmured, looking over at Emily with deep, genuine respect. "Your father can finally rest in peace."

Emily turned her gaze up toward the massive oil portrait hanging above the fireplace, where Richard Carter still stared down from the canvas with his stern, authoritative expression.

Only now, the painting didn't feel like a courtroom or a prison anymore.

It felt like a historical monument to a war that was finally over.

"Not yet, Richard," Emily said softly, turning her attention back to the attorney and Victor Sterling. "The police have taken care of the criminal fallout, but the corporate board meeting is scheduled for Monday morning."

Victor gave a slow, approving nod, a faint smile touching the corner of his lips. "And the board still thinks Daniel is the controlling shareholder. They have no idea what hit them."

Emily picked up her small black suitcase from the floor—the very suitcase she had packed to leave the mansion in defeat less than an hour ago.

She looked down at it, then back up at the grand staircase leading to her new quarters upstairs.

"Let's go review the remaining asset portfolios," Emily commanded, her voice carrying the unmistakable authority of a true Carter heir. "We have an empire to rebuild."
