Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Badge

The heavy iron gates of Warehouse 42 hung crooked in the freezing October rain.
Luca Moretti stepped out of his black armored sedan into the stench of burning diesel and wet asphalt.
He had received a tip that a rival cartel was hijacking a commercial shipment registered to Moretti Logistics.
He expected to find armed smugglers, broken shipping crates, and pool-side enforcers waiting for a bloody negotiation.
He did not expect to find three city patrol cruisers flashing silent blue lights against the corrugated metal walls.
Luca signaled for his bodyguards to keep their hands on their holsters.
Behind him, his seventy-nine-year-old father, Anthony Moretti, stepped onto the wet pavement with the help of an engraved silver cane.
The old man breathed heavily into the mist, his dark eyes scanning the perimeter with the instinct of a retired lion.
Near the rear bumper of cruiser one-zero-eight, a lone officer sat slumped against the cold metal panel.
Her breathing was shallow and uneven.
A thick line of dark crimson blood trickled from a jagged cut across her right eyebrow, spilling over her pale cheekbone.
Her tactical hands trembled as she unlatched the chin strap of her Kevlar helmet.
She pulled the helmet free, letting thick strands of chestnut hair collapse over her bruised collarbone.
Luca stopped mid-stride.
The breath vanished from his lungs.
"Sophia?"
The woman’s head snapped upward in terror.
Her eyes, usually gentle and downcast when serving breakfast at the estate, widened with pure panic.
She reached instinctively toward her tactical sidearm before wincing in pain from a fractured collarbone.
"Don't come closer, Luca."
Luca stared at the heavy tactical belt fastened around her waist.
He stared at the loaded Glock seventeen holstered against her hip.
He stared at the miniature high-definition body camera blinking faintly on the center of her chest.
"You're a cop."
"I am a detective."
Luca felt the earth tilt beneath his expensive Italian leather shoes.
"You clean my floors."
"I do."
"You poured my father’s green tea every single morning at seven o'clock."
"And I cooked your dinners."
Luca took an aggressive step forward, his jaw clenching so hard his teeth clicked.
"You're wearing a tactical vest covered in department insignia."
"Step back, Luca, this is an active crime scene."
Anthony Moretti walked forward slowly, his cane striking the asphalt with rhythmic, deliberate thuds.
The old man did not look shocked.
His weathered gaze bypassed the bleeding cut and the sidearm, fixing entirely on the embroidered gold-and-black patch sewn onto her left shoulder sleeve.
"That crest belongs to Organized Crime Intelligence."
Luca looked over his shoulder at his father.
"How do you know what her division patch looks like?"
Anthony didn't blink.
"Because that unit ran surveillance on me twenty-three years ago."
Luca frowned in disbelief.
"They investigated you?"
Anthony shook his head slowly.
"They didn't just investigate me, Luca."
"What are you saying?"
"I worked with them."
Sophia slowly pushed herself upright against the cruiser, her eyes filled with wary suspicion.
"You weren't an informant on our active rosters."
"I was an off-the-books confidential source for the brass, young lady."
Luca stared at his father as if the old man had just spoken in tongues.
"You colluded with the city police?"
"I survived a civil war that would have wiped out your mother and your cousins, Luca."
Anthony looked back at Sophia's bruised temple.
"Who ambushed you inside that storage bay?"
Sophia glanced toward the darkened corridor of Warehouse 42.
The interior was pitch-black, save for the flickering amber bulbs hanging from the rafters.
"It wasn't the Marcone syndicate."
Luca touched the inside of his coat, feeling the grip of his customized Kimber forty-five.
"Then who cracked your skull?"
Sophia swallowed the copper taste of her own blood.
"He wore class-A tactical gear."
"A private contractor?" Luca asked.
"No."
Sophia took a ragged breath that made her cracked ribs throb.
"He was a badge."
"A city officer?" Anthony asked quietly.
"He hit me from the blind spot behind the electrical breaker."
"Did he speak?" Luca asked.
Sophia looked directly into Luca's eyes.
"He wanted the camera."
"Your body camera?"
"He tried to rip the harness straight off my vest."
Luca looked at the blinking amber light pinned over her heart.
"Why didn't he shoot you?"
"Because gunshots draw the entire perimeter team."
"And because execution of a detective inside a staged raid brings internal affairs," Anthony added softly.
Sophia touched the tender bone above her eye, groaning quietly as blood coated her fingertips.
Luca felt a strange, suffocating rage ignite in his chest.
For three months, this woman had lived under his roof.
She had washed his shirts, prepared his late-night coffee when he worked on shipping manifests, and spoken with soft politeness.
He had considered her vulnerable.
He had made sure the household security guards treated her with absolute respect.
And all along, she was an undercover agent tracking his every movement.
Yet seeing her bleeding on the gravel stirred something dangerous inside him.
"You lied to my family every second of every day."
"I was assigned to investigate illegal distribution channels flowing through Moretti Logistics."
"We run legitimate freight, Sophia."
"Someone altered the manifests, Luca."
"What?"
"Three weeks ago, forty tons of unregistered pharmaceutical precursors moved under your family's customs clearance."
Luca froze.
"I didn't authorize any pharmaceutical freight."
"I know."
Sophia leaned heavily against the car door.
"That’s why I didn't file the warrant for your arrest last Friday."
Anthony stepped closer, his cane pressing firmly into the wet gravel.
"Who signed off on the altered clearance papers, Detective Bennett?"
Sophia looked at Anthony, her voice dropping to a fragile whisper.
"Your signature was on the secondary approval stamp, Mr. Moretti."
Anthony’s eyes did not waver.
"My signature was forged."
"I began to realize that two nights ago," Sophia confessed.
"Then why are you here tonight?" Luca demanded.
"Because Captain Robert Kane told me the rogue shipment was arriving at bay four."
Anthony's wooden posture suddenly shattered.
His knuckles turned bone-white around the silver handle of his cane.
"Who did you say approved this raid?"
Sophia watched the old man's sudden panic.
"Captain Robert Kane."
Anthony closed his eyes, his breathing turning ragged and shallow.
"Dear God in heaven."
Luca grabbed his father’s elbow.
"Dad? What is it?"
May you like
Anthony opened his eyes, and for the first time in his life, Luca saw raw terror in his father's gaze.
"Robert Kane was my handler twenty-three years ago."
