Chapter 9 - Vault Four-Zero-Nine

The crimson emergency lights painted the polished steel vault in shades of fresh blood.

The low, mechanical hum of the bank's ventilation system died completely, leaving only the sound of heavy breathing in the confined space.

Captain Robert Kane stood on the outer side of the reinforced security grille.

He was fifty-eight years old, his silver hair cropped in military fashion, wearing an immaculate charcoal overcoat that concealed his shoulder holster.

His face was completely devoid of emotion.

A bureaucrat who had spent three decades sending men to prison and graves with equal detachment.

Beside him, Eric Mason kept his weapon aimed directly at Sophia's forehead.

Mason's hands were steady, but a deep, twitching vein along his neck betrayed his inner panic.

"You shouldn't have dyed your hair blonde, Sophia," Mason said through the steel bars.

"It doesn't suit your skin tone."

Sophia didn't lower her Glock.

Her front sight remained locked on the center of Mason’s chest.

"Did you kill Thomas, Eric?"

The question hung in the chilled vault air like an executioner's blade.

Mason’s jaw tightened.

"Your brother was reckless, Sophia."

"Did you push his car into the river?"

"I tried to save him!" Mason shouted, his voice cracking against the steel walls.

"I told him to leave the wiretaps alone!"

"He wanted to do what was right!" Sophia screamed back.

"There is no right in this city!" Mason fired back.

"There is only who survives and who ends up in an unmarked grave!"

Captain Robert Kane raised a calm, leather-gloved hand, signaling Mason to lower his voice.

"That's enough, Eric."

Kane looked through the bars at Anthony Moretti, who stood calmly beside the viewing table.

"Hello, Anthony."

"You've aged poorly, Robert," Anthony said, leaning both hands comfortably on his silver cane.

"Retirement was good to you, I see," Kane replied smoothly.

"Until you decided to turn my logistics docks into your personal narcotics hub," Anthony countered.

"The world changed, Anthony."

"The street syndicates got sloppy, the cartels got greedy, and the politicians wanted bigger campaign contributions."

Kane took half a step closer to the grille.

"I created stability."

"You created an extortion racket," Anthony spat out.

"I kept this city from burning to the ground!" Kane snapped, a flicker of genuine rage breaking through his calm facade.

"And you kept that filthy ledger as an insurance policy."

"It worked for twenty-three years, didn't it?" Anthony smiled coldly.

Kane reached into his coat and produced an electronic master override card.

"Slide the box through the exchange tray, Sophia."

Sophia didn't flinch.

"No."

"You are officially deceased, Detective Bennett."

"I feel remarkably alive, Captain."

"If you hand over the journal and the tapes, I will ensure you make it to the Canadian border with a new identity and two million dollars in clean bearer bonds."

Sophia let out a mocking laugh that echoed down the vault corridor.

"You tried to execute me in an alley four hours ago."

"That was Captain Ross acting without my authorization," Kane lied without blinking.

"Ross doesn't tie his shoes without your authorization, Robert," Anthony interjected.

Kane sighed deeply, looking at his gold wristwatch.

"We have approximately four minutes before the tactical response team arrives from the precinct."

"They won't arrive," a voice called out from the elevator lobby.

Kane’s head snapped to the right.

Mason spun around, bringing his service weapon toward the entrance.

A deafening gunshot echoed down the marble corridor.

Mason screamed in agony as a heavy forty-five-caliber slug shattered his right knee.

He collapsed onto the polished floor, his weapon skittering away across the tiles.

Luca Moretti stepped into the vault entrance, two customized Kimber pistols held in a lethal low-ready stance.

Behind him, Captain Daniel Ross lay face-down on the lobby floor, motionless in a pool of blood.

"Drop the weapon, Kane!" Luca roared, his eyes blazing.

Kane didn't draw his sidearm.

He remained perfectly still, his eyes narrowing as he assessed the sudden shift in tactical balance.

"Luca Moretti," Kane said softly.

"The boy who thought he could run a shipping company without paying tribute to the men who control the docks."

"Open the security gate, Kane," Luca demanded, taking three deliberate steps forward.

"Or what?" Kane sneered.

"You'll shoot an unarmed police captain inside a federal depository?"

"I've shot worse men for less," Luca said.

Inside the vault, Sophia moved fast.

She tucked the leather ledger and the micro-cassettes into the inner lining of her trench coat.

Anthony grabbed the heavy steel box and slammed it against the electronic locking panel on their side of the bars.

Sparks showered from the destroyed wiring.

The hydraulic pressure in the security gate hissed violently, releasing the deadbolts.

Sophia kicked the heavy bronze grille outward with all her strength.

The heavy metal gate swung forward, slamming Kane violently against the opposite granite wall.

Kane fell to the floor, gasping for breath as his ribs cracked under the impact.

Luca stepped over the groaning form of Eric Mason and grabbed Kane by his designer overcoat collar.

He hoisted the fifty-eight-year-old captain against the wall, pressing the cold barrel of his Kimber forty-five beneath Kane's chin.

"Give me one reason why I shouldn't blow your skull into that marble," Luca hissed.

Kane choked on his own saliva, his eyes bulging with fear.

"If you kill me... the entire department... will hunt your family down to the last child..."

Anthony walked slowly through the open gate, his cane tapping firmly on the floor.

"Nobody is hunting us, Robert."

Anthony pointed toward the miniature high-definition body camera Sophia had unclipped from her pocket.

The small green light was blinking steadily on the viewing table.

It had been recording every word spoken in the vault for the last six minutes.

"Detective Bennett never turned off her recording unit," Anthony said with a chilling smile.

"Every confession."

"Every detail about Thomas Bennett's murder."

"Every dollar you extorted from my family."

Sophia walked up to Kane, her eyes burning with righteous fury.

"The stream is uploading directly to the Department of Justice public corruption server, Captain."

Kane’s face turned gray as ash.

"You... you couldn't get a cellular signal forty feet underground..."

Sophia pulled out a thin, military-grade fiber-optic cable that ran from the camera directly into the bank's internal data port behind the manager's desk.

"I spliced into the bank's hardwired landline while you were talking to Eric," Sophia whispered.

"The United States Attorney for the Southern District has the file."

"Internal Affairs has the file."

"And the state attorney general is watching the live feed right now."

Kane slumped against the wall, all the arrogance draining out of his body.

He looked down at Eric Mason, who was clutching his shattered knee, weeping silently on the cold marble floor.

"It's over, Robert," Anthony said softly.

"Twenty-three years too late, but it is finished."

The heavy elevator doors at the end of the hall opened with a crisp bell chime.

Six federal marshals in dark windbreakers spilled into the corridor, their assault rifles raised.

"Federal agents! Drop your weapons!"

Luca looked at Sophia.

Sophia looked back at Luca.

Slowly, Luca lowered his Kimber pistols and placed them on the marble floor.

Sophia stepped forward, holding her gold detective's shield high above her head.

"I am Detective Sophia Bennett, Organized Crime Division."

"I have the evidence."

"And these men are under federal arrest."
