Chapter 10 - The Dawn of the Queen

The sun rose over Lake Michigan the next morning, casting a pale, freezing light across the icy water, illuminating a city that had fundamentally changed overnight.

I was sitting in the sprawling, glass-enclosed solarium of Richard Mercer’s Gold Coast estate, wearing a thick cashmere robe and staring out at the frozen waves.

A silver tray rested on the low table beside me, holding a pot of Earl Grey tea, fresh scones, and a stack of Sunday morning newspapers that Thomas had quietly delivered an hour earlier.

The headlines were exactly as catastrophic as we had anticipated.

VALE HOLDINGS CRUMBLES: MIDNIGHT DEBT RECALL TRIGGERS MASSIVE SELL-OFF.

SHIPPING MAGNATE DOMINIC VALE UNDER FEDERAL INVESTIGATION FOLLOWING MERIDIAN GALA MELTDOWN.

THE FALL OF THE KING: MYSTERY FLASH DRIVE HANDED TO AUTHORITIES BY ESTRANGED WIFE.

I picked up my delicate teacup, the porcelain warming my cold fingers, and took a slow, deliberate sip.

The chaotic adrenaline of the previous night had completely faded, replaced by a deep, resonant calm that I hadn't felt in nearly a decade.

I wasn't Evelyn Vale anymore.

I was Evelyn Vance, and I was entirely, terrifyingly free.

Footsteps echoed softly against the marble floor, and I turned to see Richard walking into the solarium, dressed in a sharp grey suit, looking completely refreshed despite likely having stayed up all night managing the fallout of his financial maneuvers.

“Good morning, Evelyn,” he said, taking a seat in the armchair opposite mine and pouring himself a cup of tea.

“Good morning, Richard,” I replied, gesturing toward the stack of newspapers. “It seems your accountants worked quickly.”

“My accountants don't sleep when there’s blood in the water,” Richard chuckled darkly. “By 6:00 AM, we successfully froze all remaining domestic assets tied to Vale Holdings. The federal authorities raided his corporate offices at 7:30 AM based on the information provided in your flash drive. They seized every computer, every ledger, and every hard drive in the building.”

“Where is Dominic?” I asked, my voice completely devoid of emotion.

“Currently sitting in a holding cell downtown, awaiting processing for federal racketeering, wire fraud, and tax evasion,” Richard replied casually, as if discussing the weather. “His personal attorney arrived an hour ago and immediately requested a plea deal. They know they have absolutely nothing left.”

I looked out at the freezing lake, processing the monumental shift in my reality.

The man who had commanded the Chicago skyline twenty-four hours ago was now sitting in a concrete cell, stripped of his wealth, his power, and his freedom.

“And Vanessa?” I inquired.

“Fired this morning by the interim board of directors trying to salvage the company’s stock price,” Richard stated. “She was seen boarding a flight to Los Angeles at O'Hare three hours ago. I suspect she will have a very difficult time finding corporate employment with her name tied to the biggest financial scandal of the decade.”

I nodded slowly, satisfied with the absolute, surgical precision of the destruction we had orchestrated.

“So, what happens now?” I asked, setting my teacup down.

Richard leaned forward, his dark eyes locking onto mine with intense, unyielding focus.

“That depends entirely on you, Evelyn,” he said seriously. “You have absolute immunity. You have the leverage over your father to ensure he never interferes in your life again. And, thanks to a very specific clause in your prenuptial agreement regarding marital fraud and illegal activity, you are about to inherit roughly forty percent of whatever clean, liquid assets remain after the federal seizure.”

I stared at him, my mind racing through the terrifying, exhilarating possibilities of a future I had never allowed myself to imagine.

“You are a very dangerous woman, Evelyn,” Richard continued, a small, proud smile touching his lips. “You have a brilliant mind for strategy, an absolute lack of hesitation when it comes to cutting dead weight, and you understand the mechanics of power better than most men I've met in my lifetime.”

“Are you offering me a job, Richard?” I asked, arching an eyebrow.

“I’m offering you a partnership,” he corrected, leaning back in his chair. “I own the lake. But managing the political fallout, the corporate restructuring, and the societal elite? That requires a delicate, ruthless touch that I simply don't have the patience for anymore. You do.”

I looked away from him, staring out at the vast, frozen expanse of Lake Michigan.

For eight years, I had stood in the shadows, pouring coffee, smiling at galas, and quietly taking notes while men like Dominic and my father believed they ruled the world.

They were fools.

May you like

They had built empires on fragile egos and unstable alliances, entirely blind to the quiet, calculating women standing right behind them, holding the matches.

I turned back to Richard, a slow, predatory smile spreading across my face, feeling the true weight of my own power settling into my bones for the very first time.
