Chapter 15 - The New Dynasty

The snow continued to fall softly over Chicago, blanketing the streets, the freezing harbor, and the towering skyscrapers in a pristine, glittering layer of white.
Three weeks had passed since the catastrophic night of the Meridian Winter Gala—the night Dominic Vale told me to pack my things and banished me from his life, entirely unaware that he was handing me the keys to his entire kingdom.
Now, sitting at the mahogany executive desk in the primary corner office of Vanguard Asset Management on the fiftieth floor, I looked out over the sprawling metropolis that had once treated me like a silent, invisible accessory.
My phone buzzed gently on the desk.
It was an encrypted notification from the federal prison system: Inmate Dominic Vale transferred to Federal Correctional Institution, Terre Haute.
No dramatic final words. No desperate pleas. Just a quiet, bureaucratic confirmation that a chapter of my life had been permanently closed, sealed, and filed away into history.
My secretary, a sharp, brilliant young woman named Clara whom I had personally recruited from the top tier of Chicago’s financial analysts, knocked softly on the open door and stepped inside.
“Mrs. Vance, the board members for the international shipping conglomerate are waiting in the main conference room for the merger signing,” Clara reported crisply, holding a polished silver pen tray.
I stood up from my executive chair, smoothing the immaculate fabric of my black wool suit jacket, letting my fingers brush against the gold-embossed nameplate on my desk: Evelyn Vance, Chief Executive Officer.
“Thank you, Clara,” I said, my voice steady, resonant, and entirely unyielding. “Let’s go finalize the future.”
I walked out of my private office, my heels clicking with a crisp, commanding rhythm against the polished marble floor of the penthouse hallway.
I didn't look back at the past.
I didn't regret a single tear, a single betrayal, or a single moment of pain that had forged me into the woman I had become.
They had called Dominic the King of the Lake.

They had thought I was just a quiet housewife caught in the crossfire of corporate greed.
They were all about to learn that when a queen takes the throne, she doesn't just rule the kingdom—she owns the entire ocean.
