Chapter 11 - THE ENCIRCLEMENT

The heavy knocking against the wooden front door reverberated through the small apartment like a gunshot.

Sophia froze completely, the color instantly draining from her face as she grabbed my forearm with a desperate, crushing grip.

"They're here," she whispered, her voice trembling with sheer terror. "Your mother’s security detail. They must have tracked your vehicle from the estate."

"Stay behind me," I commanded, pulling her gently out of the direct line of fire from the door and stepping in front of her.

A heavy, metallic thud echoed against the frame as someone tested the doorknob, followed by a calm, authoritative voice muffled through the wood.

"Open the door, Mr. Moretti. We have direct orders from Mrs. Moretti to escort you back to the estate."

It wasn't local police; it was one of my mother’s high-level private security fixers—professionals who operated in the grey zones of the law and left zero administrative paper trails.

I glanced around the dim living room, scanning for an alternative exit. The fire escape we used to enter led back down to the alleyway, but if they had the building surrounded, stepping outside meant walking straight into a trap.

"Is there a back stairwell or service exit?" I asked Sophia, keeping my eyes fixed on the locked front door.

"Down the hall, past Lily’s room," she answered rapidly, her breath coming in shallow gasps. "It leads down to the building's basement storage lockers and exits into the rear alley behind the bakery."

"Go get Lily," I ordered firmly, handing her the encrypted flash drive and dossier from my pocket. "Take the back exit right now. Don't stop, don't look back, and head straight for the federal courthouse downtown. Find Federal Judge Sterling—he was my father’s closest uncompromised colleague. Tell him Dominic Moretti sent you with the family archive files."

"I'm not leaving you here to deal with them alone," Sophia protested, her voice cracking.

"If you stay here, they take both of you, and this entire nightmare was for nothing," I said, grabbing her shoulders and looking directly into her eyes with absolute intensity. "Go protect my daughter, Sophia. I'll buy you the time you need."

Another heavy slam shook the front door, splintering the wooden frame around the deadbolt lock. The lock gave way with a sharp crack.

Sophia hesitated for one agonizing second, then turned and bolted down the hallway toward the back bedroom.

I stepped forward, planting my feet squarely in the center of the living room as the front door burst inward, splintering off its hinges and crashing onto the hardwood floor.

Two heavy-set men in dark tactical jackets stepped through the shattered frame, their eyes scanning the room before locking onto mine.

"Step aside, Mr. Moretti," the lead fixer commanded coldly, resting a hand near his holster. "Your mother is waiting."

I didn't move an inch. I cracked my knuckles, fixed my gaze on the two men blocking the exit, and smiled grimly.

"You're going to have to get through me first."
