Chapter 8 - THE COLD TRUTH IN ASTORIA

I glared across the dim archive aisle at Enzo, my fingers tightening around the encrypted flash drive in my coat pocket. The blue glow from the computer terminals cast harsh shadows across his weathered face, making him look more like a marble monument than a living ally.
"You tracked me here," I stated flatly, stepping forward.
"I didn't track you to stop you, Dominic," Enzo replied calmly, lowering his coffee cup onto a nearby filing cabinet. "I tracked you to make sure you didn't walk into a slaughterhouse completely blind."
I stopped a few feet away from him, my jaw clenched. "What are you talking about?"
"You think your mother’s control over Sophia’s life was just a simple financial arrangement handled by lawyers and confidentiality agreements?" Enzo asked, his dark eyes locking onto mine with grim seriousness. "You think Victoria Moretti spent four years paying off a ghost just to let her live peacefully in Astoria without contingencies?"
A cold knot formed tightly in my stomach. "Get to the point, Enzo."
"The moment you cut ties with Isabella Vitale tonight and walked out of that ballroom, the family’s emergency protocols automatically shifted into high gear," Enzo explained, stepping closer. "Victoria doesn't just manage liabilities; she eliminates variables. If Sophia realizes you’ve discovered her location and attempts to run again, or worse, if the Vitale family finds out about Lily before we can insulate the corporation from the fallout, your mother won't hesitate to pull the final trigger."
"The final trigger," I repeated, the words tasting like poison. "She’s my mother, Enzo. Sophia is the mother of her own grandchild."
"Victoria Moretti cares about the survival of the dynasty above all human considerations, Dominic," Enzo said firmly, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "She views Sophia as an existential threat to everything your family has built over a century. If you drive out to Astoria tonight without a strategy, you won't rescue them. You'll lead Victoria’s fixers right to their front door."
I stared at him, weighing every syllable of his warning. The bitter reality of my family’s ruthless nature settled over me like lead. For years, I had lived in a gilded cage believing my status insulated me from the brutal mechanics of our empire, only to discover that I was merely the prize pony being driven down a predetermined track.
"Then give me the complete picture," I demanded, pulling the flash drive out of my pocket and holding it up. "Every file, every contingency, every hidden layer you and my mother built behind my back over the past four years. Lay it all out right now."
Enzo reached into his heavy wool coat, pulled out a second, thicker manila envelope, and tossed it onto the metal desk between us.
"Everything is in there," Enzo said quietly. "The secure bank accounts, the encrypted communication logs, and the exact names of the security contractors your mother uses to monitor the Astoria safehouse."
I grabbed the envelope, ripped the flap open, and pulled out a stack of physical documents detailing the exact layout of the Astoria apartment building, including access codes, floor plans, and shift schedules for the surveillance teams stationed outside.

"Why are you giving me this?" I asked, looking up at him in suspicion. "If my mother finds out you handed me her operational playbook, she'll strip you of everything."
Enzo offered a faint, tired smile that failed to reach his eyes. "Because four years ago, I watched a good man lose his soul to a corporate lie, Dominic. It's time someone burned the cage down."
