Chapter 14 - The Return to the Westchester Fortress

The sunrise over the Westchester hills painted the sky in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and blood-red as Damian Caruso’s armored SUV swept through the wrought-iron gates of the estate, followed closely by a convoy of tactical transport vans.

Inside the master suite of the mansion, I sat on the edge of the large velvet bed, holding Leah tightly against my chest as she slowly blinked awake, her little hands clutching her worn velvet bunny.

The house was quiet now, the adrenaline of the midnight siege having faded into a tense, watchful calm.

Luca stood guard by the bedroom door, his arms crossed over his chest, giving me a respectful nod when I caught his eye.

Suddenly, heavy footfalls echoed up the grand staircase.

The double doors of the master suite swung open.

Damian stood on the threshold.

He looked exhausted, his tactical jacket dusty and stained with the mud of a Colombian storm, his dark hair slightly disheveled, but his eyes—those fierce, obsidian eyes—instantly locked onto me and Leah with a hunger that defied description.

"Damian," I whispered, the word catching in my throat as I stood up from the bed, still holding Leah.

He didn't walk across the room; he closed the distance in three long, desperate strides.

Without a word, he wrapped his massive arms around both of us, pulling us into his chest with a fierce, unbreakable strength that made it almost difficult to breathe.

For a long moment, nobody spoke.

We just stood there in the center of the sunlit bedroom, holding each other as the ghosts of the past two years finally dissolved into nothingness.

Leah looked up at the tall, intimidating man holding her so gently, her little green eyes blinking with sleepy recognition.

"Papa," she whispered softly, her tiny hand reaching out to touch the stubble along Damian’s jawline.

Damian froze.

The fierce, untouchable mafia boss—the man who controlled half the underworld and had just dismantled an international cartel before breakfast—let out a ragged, broken breath, closing his eyes as a single tear traced down his cheek.

"My little bird," Damian choked out, his voice thick with emotion as he kissed the top of her head. "I've got you. I'm never letting you go."

He lifted his head, his dark gaze shifting up to meet mine.

"Vance talked," Damian said, his voice hardening back into absolute steel, though his arms remained gentle around us. "Donato Moretti ordered the hit. He ordered our child stolen. And right now, my men are delivering Dr. Heinrich Vance to the old man's front porch as a prelude to total war."

I looked into his eyes, feeling no fear—only a profound, unshakeable certainty.

"End it, Damian," I said quietly, resting my hand against his chest, right over his beating heart. "End it so we can finally start our lives."
