Chapter 13 - The Ambush in the Iron Pines

The departure from Saint Jude’s Sanatorium was swift, decisive, and executed with military precision
Doctor Crane was placed in the care of two federal marshals who arrived via helicopter to seize every medical file in the facility
Michael sat in the middle row of the lead SUV, wrapped in Luca’s heavy black wool coat, sipping warm broth from a silver thermos
His hand remained locked in Luca’s grip, refusing to let go of his older brother for even a single second
I sat across from him, gently cleaning the dried ink and charcoal from his scarred knuckles with warm, damp cloths
Doctor Harris monitored his vitals from the rear seat, confirming that his heart was strong despite the years of heavy chemical suppression
"The sedative levels in his bloodstream will clear completely within seventy-two hours," Doctor Harris reported quietly to Luca
"His cognitive memory is reassembling itself rapidly through sensory association, Mister Moretti"
Michael looked at me through the soft shadows of the vehicle, his dark eyes filled with a quiet, fragile wonder
"You are Emily," Michael whispered, remembering the name Luca had repeated while introducing us in the solarium
"Yes, Michael," I answered, offering him a warm, reassuring smile
"My brother told me that you bled to keep my mother’s voice alive," he said, his voice shaking with profound gratitude
"You have the same gentle eyes she had when she looked at us after Sunday mass"
Tears stung my eyelashes, and I could only nod, feeling the deep, unbreakable bond that tied this family together
Our four-vehicle convoy reached the southern boundary of Douglas County as the afternoon light began to fail over the timberline
The sleet had intensified into a thick, swirling northern blizzard, reducing our visibility to thirty paces through the swirling white
Highway Fifty-Three cut through a narrow limestone canyon known as the Devil’s Throat, where sheer rock walls rose thirty feet above the road
Suddenly, a deafening explosion ripped through the frozen air, shaking our armored chassis like a toy
A massive ancient pine tree, severed at the trunk by industrial demolition charges, crashed down across the two-lane highway directly ahead
Luca slammed both feet onto the anti-lock brakes, the heavy tires howling against the packed ice as we skidded to a halt ten feet from the trunk
Before Marco’s security vehicle could reverse, a second explosion behind us dropped a wall of shattered limestone across our retreat
We were trapped inside the narrow canyon, boxed in by rock and burning timber
"Ambush!" Marco’s voice roared through the tactical radio, followed immediately by the crack of high-caliber rifle fire
Heavy lead slugs slammed against the armored windshield of our SUV, creating spiderweb fractures across the thick ballistic glass
"Down! Everyone get down on the floorboards!" Luca commanded, shoving Michael and me beneath the level of the reinforced doors
Through the frosted side window, I saw six unmarked black pickup trucks idling atop the rocky ridge above the highway
Men in white winter camouflage emerged from behind the boulders, wielding automatic rifles and tactical shotguns
These were not federal agents or rival don capos; these were the Bellini family’s rogue dock enforcers and private mercenaries
Dominic Bellini’s second-in-command, a ruthless waterfront butcher named Hector Vargas, had mobilized their remaining loyalists
They knew that if Michael Moretti reached Chicago alive to testify before the federal grand jury, the Bellini name was erased forever
"They want Michael dead before sunset," Luca said, his eyes turning back into the lethal obsidian stones of an underworld warlord
He reached into the tactical compartment beneath his seat, withdrawing an automatic combat shotgun and three extra drum magazines
He looked at me where I huddled over Michael on the vehicle floor, my body acting as a shield for his recovering brother
"Emily, take this," Luca ordered, pressing a heavy steel magazine into my hands while securing the tactical lock on the passenger door
"Keep Michael beneath the seats. If the glass breaches, use the weapon on the console"
He looked into my eyes, and for a fleeting, terrifying moment, his thumb brushed my cheekbone where Vanessa had broken my skin
"I will not let them touch either of you," Luca promised, his voice deeper than thunder
He kicked the driver’s side door open, rolling out into the freezing snow as a volley of rifle fire chipped the asphalt around his boots
Marco Ramos and six Moretti enforcers moved into tactical flanking positions, returning suppressive fire with lethal, coordinated discipline
The roar of gunfire inside the narrow rock canyon was deafening, bouncing off the limestone walls like continuous rolling artillery
Up on the ridge, two mercenaries were dropped from their perches, their bodies tumbling down the icy rock face into the ditch
Luca moved with terrifying, predatory aggression, using the burning pine trunk as cover while advancing toward the canyon path
He fired three rapid-fire slugs into the engine block of the lead ambush truck above, sending a massive plume of fire into the gray sky
Beside me on the floorboards, Michael began to shake violently, the horrific sounds of gunfire triggering the trauma of that night on the pier
He clutched his head with both hands, groaning in sheer agony as memories of Dominic’s pistol shots flashed through his healing mind
"Michael, look at me!" I cried out, grabbing his trembling face between my hands, forcing his eyes to lock onto mine
"You are not on that pier anymore! You are not dying in the river! Luca is out there fighting for you!"
Michael’s breathing slowed, his dark eyes focusing on the determination in my face, the panic receding before my steady voice
Suddenly, the rear glass of the driver’s compartment shattered inward as Hector Vargas dropped from the low rock ledge onto our hood
Vargas raised a heavy semi-automatic pistol, aiming directly through the broken divider at Michael’s chest
My instincts took over before thought could interfere
I grabbed the heavy metal thermos from the console and hurled it with all my strength directly into the mercenary's face
The scalding liquid and heavy steel struck Vargas across the bridge of his nose, blinding him and causing his shot to tear harmlessly into the roof
Before Vargas could recover his aim, a massive, gloved hand reached through the shattered driver’s window from the outside
Luca grabbed Vargas by the collar of his tactical vest and hauled him bodily through the frame, slamming him violently onto the frozen hood
With a single, devastating strike of his combat shotgun’s steel receiver, Luca neutralized the mercenary commander in the snow
The remaining three gunmen on the ridge, seeing their leader broken and the Moretti enforcers flanking their positions, threw down their weapons
The canyon fell into sudden, ringing silence, punctuated only by the crackle of burning pine branches and the howling northern wind
Luca stood on the blood-spattered snow, his chest heaving, his dark coat dusted with white powder and frost
He walked back to our vehicle, ripped the damaged door open, and looked down at his brother and me huddled together safely on the floor
"Is everyone breathing?" Luca asked, his voice shaking with fierce, protective adrenaline
Michael reached up, taking his brother’s outstretched hand, and pulled himself to his feet with newfound strength
May you like
"We are breathing, Luca," Michael said, standing tall beside his brother in the winter gale
"Now let us go finish what mother started in Chicago"
