Chapter 14 - The Reckoning of the Five Families

The grand courtroom of the Dirksen Federal Building in downtown Chicago was packed to maximum capacity by eleven o'clock Tuesday morning
Over two hundred journalists, federal prosecutors, and armed United States Marshals filled the mahogany benches beneath the vaulted ceiling
Outside the reinforced glass windows, satellite broadcasting trucks lined Dearborn Street, their cameras beamed to every major network in the nation
The headline flashing across the television monitors in the lobby read: THE RESURRECTION OF MICHAEL MORETTI AND THE FALL OF THE BELLINI EMPIRE
Sitting at the defense table in bright orange correctional jumpsuits and heavy leg shackles were Dominic and Vanessa Bellini
Nine days in federal isolation had stripped every vestige of glamour and arrogance from the former socialite princess
Vanessa’s blonde hair was unwashed, pulled back into a ragged knot, and her face was gaunt, hollow, and gray under the fluorescent lights
Dominic sat with his head bowed, his fractured ribs tightly bandaged beneath his prison uniform, staring hopelessly at the oak floor
At the front of the gallery, surrounded by six federal marshals, sat Luca Moretti, dressed in an immaculate dark navy three-piece suit
Beside him sat Samuel Bennett, wearing a new tailored wool overcoat that Luca had purchased for him on Michigan Avenue
I sat on Luca’s right, wearing a simple, elegant ivory dress that Mrs. Carter had arranged for me, my split lip healed into a faint, honorable line
Two rows behind us sat my father, Thomas Dawson, looking healthy, vibrant, and alive following his successful heart surgery at Northwestern
The entire medical expense, including private rehabilitation care for the next five years, had been settled in full by Luca’s private foundation
"All rise for the Honorable Judge Arthur Vance," the bailiff’s deep voice resonated through the silent chamber
The judge took his bench, adjusted his glasses, and looked down at the special federal prosecutor, Assistant Attorney General Marcus Cole
"Does the government have its primary witness prepared to take the stand?" Judge Vance inquired
"We do, Your Honor," the prosecutor answered, stepping toward the center of the courtroom floor
"The government calls Michael Moretti to the stand"
A collective, breathless gasp rippled through the gallery of journalists and syndicate onlookers
The heavy oak doors at the rear of the courtroom swung open, admitting Michael Moretti under the close escort of two senior federal agents
He walked with an upright, dignified posture, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit that mirrored his older brother’s style
The paleness of his asylum confinement was fading, replaced by the natural color of a man reclaiming his rightful name and place in the world
As he passed our row, his eyes met Luca’s for a brief, powerful second, exchanging a nod of absolute brotherhood and mutual vindication
Michael ascended the witness box, raised his right hand, and swore an oath on the Holy Bible before the entire city of Chicago
For the next two hours, Michael spoke with steady, articulate clarity, detailing the events of that fateful night nine years ago
He recounted how Dominic Bellini had offered him bribes to alter the Moretti shipping manifests to allow illegal munitions into the harbor
He explained how he had refused, threatening to inform his father and brother of the Bellini family’s treacherous smuggling operations
He detailed how Vanessa had lured him to The Rusty Anchor diner under the pretense of seeking peace between their households
And he described the sound of Dominic’s revolver firing on the cold pier before the black waters of the river swallowed his consciousness
Beside the prosecution table, the uncut seventeen-minute audio recording of Isabella Moretti’s final confession was played into the court record
The late matriarch’s frail, weeping voice echoed off the courtroom walls, laying bare the monstrous web of deceit that had broken her family
Next came the forensic reports from the dredged 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle, displaying the matching ballistic markings from Dominic’s registered weapon
Finally, Doctor Arthur Crane’s signed federal deposition was entered into evidence, confirming nine years of unlawful detention and chemical suppression
Vanessa Bellini began to weep hysterically at the defense table, burying her face in her shackled hands as her attorneys stared at the documents in defeat
"Mister Moretti," the prosecutor concluded gently, looking up at Michael
"Did you ever steal five million dollars from your family, or flee your home voluntarily?"
Michael looked directly across the courtroom at the shivering woman who had tried to erase his existence
"I never stole a penny from my father," Michael answered, his voice ringing with pure, unyielding truth
"I defended my family’s name, and I was buried alive by people who smiled at my mother’s funeral"
Judge Vance did not even require the jury to deliberate on the preliminary motions for dismissal
He struck his heavy wooden gavel against the sound block with a sharp, thunderous crack that signaled the end of an era
"The court finds overwhelming, undeniable probable cause on all forty-two counts, including attempted murder, kidnapping, and racketeering," the judge ruled
"Bail is permanently denied. The defendants will remain in administrative segregation at the Metropolitan Correctional Center pending formal sentencing"
As the federal marshals moved in to drag Dominic and Vanessa toward the holding cells, Vanessa suddenly broke away from her guard
She lunged toward the mahogany railing separating the gallery, her bloodshot eyes locking onto Luca’s unyielding face
"Luca! Luca, please!" she screamed, her voice cracking in hysterical, frantic desperation
"I kept him alive! I could have let Dominic drown him in that river, but I saved his life for you!"
Luca slowly rose from his seat, stepping up to the wooden barrier until he was inches from her wild, weeping face
His dark eyes were devoid of anger, hatred, or regret; there was only the cold, vast emptiness of absolute judgment
"You did not save him for me, Vanessa," Luca said, his voice quiet, calm, and terrifying in its finality
"You saved him as a hostage to feed your own boundless greed"
He leaned down, whispering the final words she would ever hear from his lips
"My mother forgave you before she died, because she was an angel of God. But I am Luca Moretti, and I will make sure your name is forgotten by tomorrow noon"
The marshals grabbed Vanessa by the arms and dragged her through the heavy steel door, her screams fading into the subterranean corridors
The courtroom erupted into a frenzy of flashing cameras and shouting journalists, but Luca never looked at the press
May you like
He turned around, offering his arm to me and his other hand to his brother Michael
Together, the Moretti family walked out of the federal courthouse into the bright, crisp Chicago afternoon
