Chapter 10 - The Return of the Queen

The midnight air over the city was thick with the metallic smell of rain and burning asphalt. A sleek, unmarked black SUV pulled off the interstate and slipped quietly into the underground parking garage of the downtown corporate tower—the very building where Clara Hughes had spent five years managing the logistics of a criminal empire.

Clara stepped out of the vehicle. She no longer wore the flannel shirt and worn boots of her mountain exile. Instead, she was dressed in a sharp, tailored charcoal pantsuit, her dark hair pulled back into its signature severe bun, and her expression carved from cold, unyielding stone. She wasn't the fugitive hiding in the woods anymore. She was the architect returning to demolish her own creation.

She bypassed the lobby security entirely, using her old biometric override codes to access the executive elevator bank. The digital display blinked green, and the doors slid shut, carrying her upward toward the penthouse suite where Sal Maroni currently sat drinking Arthur’s scotch and reviewing stolen files.

When the elevator doors opened on the top floor, two of Maroni’s armed guards stepped out from the shadows of the hallway, their submachine guns raised.

“Hold it right—!”

The first guard didn't finish his sentence. Clara moved with sudden, terrifying speed, stepping inside his guard, driving the heel of her palm upward into his nose, and sweeping his legs out from under him before he could squeeze the trigger. As the second guard raised his weapon, Clara twisted, grabbed the barrel, shoved it downward, and drove her elbow hard into his solar plexus, dropping him to the carpet gasping for air.

She stepped over their unconscious bodies without breaking stride, her heels clicking rhythmically against the polished marble floor.

She pushed open the heavy oak doors of the grand study.

Sal Maroni sat comfortably behind the mahogany desk, a glass of amber scotch in one hand and a thick manila folder spread open across the blotter. Arthur sat tied to a wooden chair in the center of the room, his face bruised, his clothes stained with blood and dirt, guarded by two more enforcers standing near the windows.

Sal looked up, expecting to see Leo or another trembling accountant. Instead, his eyes widened slightly as Clara walked calmly into the center of the room, her hands resting casually at her sides.

“Well, well,” Sal smirked, setting his glass down and leaning back in the chair. “The runaway secretary decided to come back to the slaughterhouse. You brought yourself right into the lion’s den, sweetheart.”

Arthur raised his head, his pale gray eyes locking onto Clara’s face in utter disbelief. “Clara... what are you doing here? You were safe. You got away.”

Clara didn't look at Arthur. Her cold, piercing gaze remained fixed entirely on Sal Maroni, who was currently tapping his fingers against the stolen file containing her past.

“You shouldn't have opened that file, Sal,” Clara said, her voice eerily calm, carrying across the silent room like a death sentence.

Sal laughed, picking up a photograph from the folder. “What’s the matter, Clara? Worried people are going to find out who you really are? A trained operative from the intelligence underground who traded her badge for a front-row seat to a criminal empire? Too bad. By morning, every rival family in this city—and every federal prosecutor on the task force—will know your entire life story.”

Clara took another step forward. One of Maroni’s enforcers stepped in her path, raising a heavy automatic pistol toward her chest.

“Stop right there, bitch,” the enforcer growled.

Clara didn't stop. With blinding speed, she ducked beneath the barrel, grabbed the enforcer’s wrist, twisted it until bone snapped with a sickening crunch, and relieved him of the weapon before he could scream. She brought the pistol up, pressed the cold steel barrel directly against the center of his forehead, and pulled the trigger without blinking.

The body hit the Persian rug with a dull thud.

The second enforcer raised his rifle, but before he could acquire his target, a second gunshot echoed through the room—fired not from Clara’s weapon, but from a small derringer Arthur had managed to retrieve from his ankle holster while Maroni was distracted. The bullet caught the second enforcer square in the chest, sending him crashing backward through the glass display case.

Sal Maroni scrambled backward out of his chair, knocking the desk lamp over as his face turned pale with sheer terror. “You... you’re out of your mind. You’re both dead!”

Clara walked slowly toward the desk, stepping over the broken glass and bloodstains, keeping the smoking pistol leveled directly at Sal’s chest.

“You wanted my files, Sal?” Clara asked softly, standing directly over him as he cowered against the mahogany shelves. “You wanted to know who I was before I walked into this house?”

May you like

She cocked the pistol.

“I was the one who trained the people who hunted your family out of the eastern territories ten years ago. And tonight, I’m the one who finishes the job.”
