Chapter 8 - The Empire in Freefall

Back in the city, the prophecy Clara left behind began to unfold with terrifying speed. Within forty-eight hours of Arthur’s departure for Maine, the fragile ecosystem of the Costello syndicate collapsed into open warfare. Without Clara’s intricate web of bribes, silent payoffs, and strategic alliances keeping the local precinct commanders and rival capos in check, the delicate balance of power shattered.
Leo sat at the mahogany desk in the grand study, trembling as he stared at three different computer screens flashing red error alerts. The primary offshore accounts had been frozen by federal investigators acting on the detailed financial trail Viktor Vance had left behind before his death. The eastern shipping lanes were blocked by angry dockworkers who hadn't received their hazard bonuses because Leo couldn't figure out Clara’s proprietary payroll encryption codes.
The heavy oak doors burst open without a knock.
Sal Maroni—the surviving brother of the clan Arthur had supposedly bought off weeks prior—strode into the study flanked by two armed enforcers holding silenced submachine guns. Sal wore an expensive leather trench coat, a smug, predatory grin carved across his scarred face.
“Well, well, well,” Sal purred, looking around the empty, disorganized room. “The king is out of town, the queen has flown the coop, and the little prince is playing accountant in a burning house.”
Leo scrambled backward in his chair, knocking his coffee mug over onto the blotter. “Mr. Maroni! Mr. Costello will be back tomorrow. You shouldn't be here—this is private property—”
“Private property?” Sal laughed harshly, drawing a heavy silver-plated pistol from his coat and resting it casually against the corner of the mahogany desk. “The south docks belong to my family as of this morning. Your distribution channels are frozen, your bank accounts are locked by the feds, and Arthur’s little empire is officially up for grabs.”
Sal stepped closer to the desk, leaning down until his face was inches from Leo’s terrified eyes. “Where is Clara? If she were here, she’d have a counter-offer ready, a bribe prepared, and a bullet waiting for me in the lobby. But she’s gone, isn't she? You amateurs thought you could run a kingdom without the person who built the foundation.”
Leo couldn't speak. His throat was entirely dry, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.

“Here’s what’s going to happen, kid,” Sal said smoothly, patting Leo on the cheek with a cold, leather-gloved hand. “You’re going to call Arthur, tell him his eastern territory has been repossessed by the Maroni family, and advise him to stay up north where the air is clean. Because if he comes back to this city, he won't even find a grave waiting for him.”
Sal turned on his heel, gesturing to his enforcers, and walked out of the study, leaving Leo shaking in the wreckage of an empire that was crumbling faster than anyone could log.
