Chapter 13 - The Foundation of Honor

The midnight chill off the waters of Lake Michigan bit through the heavy wool of Luca’s overcoat as the black sedan slipped silently into the restricted commercial zone of the Racine marina.
A hundred yards ahead, moored against the wooden pier, sat a sleek white yacht with its twin diesel engines idling in the dark water.
Inside a small harbormaster’s office overlooking the slip, Victor Vance paced frantically across the linoleum floor, clutching a silver laptop against his chest while checking his Rolex every ten seconds.
“Where is the harbor pilot?” Victor muttered angrily to his terrified associate standing by the door.
“He said he’d be here with the clearance codes ten minutes ago!”
Before the associate could reply, the heavy wooden door of the office swung open without a sound.
Luca Moretti walked into the room, his tall silhouette blocking the dim yellow light from the exterior floodlamps.
Behind him walked Julia Bennett, carrying a sleek black aluminum briefcase.
Victor froze, his face turning the color of curdled milk.
“M-Mr. Moretti,” Victor stammered, stumbling backward until his spine hit the filing cabinets.
“How... how did you find me?”
Luca didn't answer.
He walked calmly across the room, pulled out a metal chair, and sat down with casual elegance, resting his hands on his knees.
“Open the silver laptop, Victor,” Luca commanded, his voice barely above a whisper, yet carrying the crushing weight of an avalanche.
“I... I don't have anything belonging to you!” Victor lied, his fingers gripping the metal casing of the computer so hard his knuckles turned white.
Julia stepped forward, unlatched her aluminum briefcase, and set a portable satellite uplink device onto the corner of the desk.
With her left hand, she tapped three keys on a wireless keyboard.
A sharp, high-pitched digital beep echoed through the small room.
On the screen of Victor’s silver laptop, a red progress bar instantly appeared, accompanied by the flashing text: OVERRIDE PROTOCOL ENGAGED — DECRYPTING LOCAL STORAGE.
Victor’s eyes bulged out of his head.
“What did you do?” he shrieked.
“You’re attempting to route thirty gigabytes of encrypted files through an unsecured satellite proxy,” Julia said, her voice completely calm, professional, and dripping with pity.
“Any first-year network administrator can trace that ping back to your exact MAC address in less than forty seconds.”
She looked up, meeting Victor’s terrified stare.
“And since federal cyber-crimes division is currently mirroring all Moretti network traffic, congratulations—you just uploaded your entire escape itinerary directly to the FBI cyber-unit in Washington.”
Victor let out a strangled gasp, his knees giving out beneath him.
He dropped the laptop onto the floor, collapsing into a heap beside the metal cabinets.
“Please,” Victor wept, clutching at the hem of Luca’s trousers.
“Don't let them take me to federal prison! I’ll give you everything! I’ll sign whatever you want!”
Luca looked down at the cowering man with absolute, freezing detachment.
“You didn't steal my shipping files, Victor,” Luca said quietly.
“You stole my aunt’s peace of mind.”
He gestured toward Daniel, who stepped into the room accompanied by two federal marshals in plain clothes.
“Take him away,” Luca commanded.
As the marshals hauled the sobbing executive out into the cold night air, Julia calmly unplugged her satellite uplink and packed it back into her briefcase.
Luca stood up, watching her with a deep, unspoken warmth in his dark eyes.
“You handled that like a veteran commander, Julia,” Luca noted softly.
“Corporations teach you how to protect your assets, Mr. Moretti,” Julia replied, snapping the briefcase shut.
“Life teaches you how to protect the people who matter.”
Luca offered a rare, genuine smile that softened the hard lines of his face.
“Come, Julia. Let’s go back to Chicago. Your mother’s rehabilitation report arrived on my phone ten minutes ago.”
“And?” Julia asked, her breath catching in her throat.
“She walked twenty steps unassisted this afternoon,” Luca said softly.

“She is coming home to a fully renovated garden apartment on the north side tomorrow morning.”
Tears of pure, unadulterated joy spilled over Julia’s eyelashes as she looked at the man who had resurrected her entire family from the ashes of despair.
