Chapter 14 - Behind Iron Bars

The visiting room of the Metropolitan Correctional Center downtown was a bleak landscape of reinforced glass, gray cinderblock walls, and the constant hum of electronic security doors.

Vanessa Bellini sat on a bolted metal stool behind the thick Plexiglass partition, staring at her own reflection in the smeared glass.

Her prison uniform was a coarse, oversized orange jumpsuit that swallowed her frame.

Her makeup was entirely gone, revealing the dark, bruised circles of sleepless exhaustion beneath her eyes.

A prison guard tapped on the glass partition.

“Visitor for inmate Bellini,” the guard barked flatly.

Vanessa slowly raised her head, expecting her defense attorney with another round of hopeless postponement filings.

Instead, on the other side of the glass, standing in the visitor’s alcove wrapped in a magnificent navy blue cashmere coat, was Teresa Moretti.

Beside the elderly woman stood Julia Bennett, holding a small leather clipboard.

Vanessa’s jaw dropped open.

She slammed her palm against the glass partition, her face twisting into an ugly mask of pure, unbridled hatred.

“You!” Vanessa shrieked, her voice echoing off the concrete walls.

“You disgusting little hypocrite! You come here to gloat? You think you’ve won?”

Teresa Moretti did not flinch.

She calmly picked up the heavy plastic telephone receiver attached to the wall, lifted it to her ear, and waited for the intercom to connect.

Vanessa hesitated, then snatched her own receiver off the cradle, her hands shaking with rage.

“Get out of here!” Vanessa screamed into the plastic mouthpiece.

“You don't belong in this room! You belong scrubbing floors in a basement where you came from!”

“Vanessa,” Teresa’s voice came through the small speaker, calm, steady, and filled with a profound, unshakable dignity.

“I came here today not to gloat, but to bring you a document.”

Vanessa laughed hysterically, the sound grating and harsh.

“A document? What kind of document? Are you going to beg Luca to drop the charges? He won't! He hates you both!”

“Luca does not hate you, Vanessa,” Teresa said softly.

“Hate requires an emotional investment. To Luca, you are simply a closed file.”

Julia leaned forward, speaking into her own receiver from the visitor’s side.

“Miss Bellini, this is the final asset liquidation schedule approved by the federal receivership board.”

Vanessa pressed her face against the glass.

“What are you talking about?”

“Every piece of jewelry, every designer gown, every offshore trust, and every luxury property registered under your name has been legally forfeit to the Moretti-Bennett Family Foundation,” Julia stated, her voice clear and merciless.

“What?” Vanessa gasped, her breath frosting the glass.

“You left me nothing?”

“We left you exactly what you deserved,” Julia replied evenly.

“A clean slate to learn the true value of hard work.”

Teresa looked at the broken woman through the glass, her eyes filled with gentle, maternal pity.

“When I was your age, Vanessa, I worked fourteen hours a day scrubbing marble floors in a hotel lobby,” Teresa said quietly.

“I was poor, I was tired, and my hands were blistered and raw.”

She paused, letting her words sink into the heavy silence.

“But I went home every night with my honor intact, knowing that I had never destroyed another human being to get where I was.”

Teresa set her receiver back onto its cradle with a soft, final click.

She turned away from the glass partition, taking Julia’s arm.

“Let’s go home, Julia,” Teresa said softly.

“The air in here is far too heavy.”

Vanessa slammed her fist against the Plexiglass over and over, screaming curses into the empty air as the heavy security doors closed behind the two women, sealing her fate in the absolute dark.
