Chapter 2 - The Mark Beneath the Silk

The silence stretched so long that the distant hum of the estate’s ventilation sounded like roaring thunder.

Vanessa’s hand stayed on Luca’s shoulder, but the fingers tightened, wrinkling the expensive fabric of his suit.

"Luca, you know how delicate the parlor staff can be under pressure," Vanessa insisted, her voice pitching slightly higher.

"She dropped a heavy bronze candelabra near the pedals, screamed at the top of her lungs, and ran out like a lunatic."

"Mrs. Carter can verify that the girl has a history of erratic anxiety."

Mrs. Carter, standing rigid by the swinging kitchen doors, gave an immediate, practiced nod of agreement.

"Yes, Mr. Moretti," the housekeeper added smoothly.

"Emily has been exceptionally clumsy all week."

"Her father’s passing last month left her fragile, and we have been trying to show her Christian charity."

I stood entirely helpless between the two women, clutching the hot silver carafe until the heat burned through my cotton napkin.

Every instinct warned me that challenging the future mistress of the house in front of twenty armed syndicate captains was suicide.

Luca’s family ruled the South Side docks, and Vanessa’s father controlled the union trucking routes.

This engagement was not a romance; it was a five-hundred-million-dollar armistice signed in blood and iron.

I was an expendable orphan earning twenty dollars an hour to dust baseboards and serve dark coffee.

Luca stood up slowly, towering over the table, his height casting a dark silhouette across the white linen cloth.

He did not look at Vanessa, nor did he look at Mrs. Carter.

He stepped around his high-backed chair, walking with quiet, predatory grace until he was standing two feet in front of me.

The faint scent of cedarwood, aged bourbon, and crisp tobacco washed over my senses.

"Put the pot down, Emily," he commanded softly.

My hands were shaking violently as I set the heavy carafe onto the corner of the polished mahogany credenza.

When I turned back, Luca was already studying the strange, unnatural way I was holding my chin tilted upwards.

"Look at me," he ordered.

I forced my chin down, meeting his penetrating hazel gaze, but the motion pulled directly against the swollen tissue of my throat.

A sharp wince escaped me, and a single tear slipped down my cheek, catching the candlelight.

"Luca, please, you’re embarrassing our guests over a kitchen servant," Vanessa chided, walking over to slip her arm through his.

"Let security escort her out to the garage so we can finish our toasts."

"Don't touch me right now, Vanessa," Luca said, his tone chillingly flat.

He didn't raise his voice, yet the socialite froze mid-step, her red lips parting in genuine shock.

Luca reached out with his right hand, his fingers surprisingly gentle, and hooked his index finger beneath the black velvet lace at my collar.

My entire body stiffened in panic.

If he pulled it away, the banquet guests would see the truth, but Vanessa’s retribution would follow me outside the gates.

"Luca, don't!" Vanessa warned, her voice losing its sweet veneer.

"You are invading the staff’s privacy, and it’s completely unbecoming of your status tonight."

Luca ignored her completely.

With a single, deliberate flick of his wrist, he untied the velvet ribbon and pulled it free from my neck.

A collective gasp rippled through the dining table.

Four prominent councilmen set down their glasses, their expressions shifting from amusement to grim discomfort.

Beneath the soft fabric, the skin was not merely flushed from anxiety or a screaming fit.

Four deep, mottled purple finger impressions were seared into the pale flesh along the right side of my windpipe.

On the left side, the distinct, brutal gouge of an opposing thumb sat directly over my carotid artery.

Small specks of broken capillaries formed a constellation of blood-red dots across my upper collarbone.

It was the unmistakable, horrific signature of manual strangulation.

Luca stared at the marks for three long seconds, his jaw setting so hard that the muscles ticked beneath his skin.

The temperature in the dining room seemed to drop ten degrees.

He reached out with his thumb, lightly skimming the edge of the bruised jawline without causing me additional pain.

"Who did this in my house?" Luca asked, the words vibrating with a quiet, lethal authority.

Nobody dared to breathe.

The twenty-six guests, men who routinely ordered violent shakedowns across the state, sat frozen like stone gargoyles.

Vanessa stepped backward until her spine hit the mahogany credenza, her hands trembling against the crimson silk of her gown.

"I... I have no idea what that girl gets into outside this estate," Vanessa stammered, her eyes darting toward the exits.

"She probably has an abusive boyfriend in the projects."

"You can't honestly believe this happened under your roof tonight, Luca."

I looked at Luca, my vision blurred by unshed tears, and slowly shook my head side to side.

I couldn't speak the truth, but I refused to let her blame an imaginary ghost for the assault that nearly killed me.

Luca looked from my bruised throat straight into Vanessa’s widening eyes.

"She didn't leave this estate today, Vanessa," Luca said evenly.

"She checked in through the security gate at six in the morning, and the perimeter has been locked down for this banquet ever since."

He turned his gaze toward the service entrance where two of his personal enforcers stood post.

"Marco," Luca called out, his voice sharp as an executioner's blade.

"Lock the dining hall doors."

"Nobody leaves their seat until I find out who put their hands on this girl."
