Chapter 4 - The Broken Seal

Vanessa’s face transformed from indignant arrogance to sheer, cornered desperation.

She looked around the grand table, seeking an ally among her family’s longstanding business associates.

Not a single person met her gaze.

The mafia underbosses who had laughed at her witty jokes an hour earlier now stared down into their plates.

In Luca Moretti’s empire, treachery was punished with merciless finality, but lying directly to his face during a blood truce was worse.

"Luca, you don't understand the full picture," Vanessa began, her hands gesturing wildly in the air.

"The girl was spying on me!"

"I went into the salon to review personal wedding documents, and she was listening at the keyhole!"

"Julian merely restrained her because we believed she had been planted by the federal task force!"

"Is that why your driver used enough force to fracture her hyoid bone?" Luca asked, his voice deadly still.

"You have known Emily’s family since you were twelve years old, Vanessa."

"Her father repaired the instruments in your father’s estate for two decades before he died."

"You knew she was harmless, and you knew she had no voice to defend herself against your lies."

Luca turned toward me, his expression softening just enough to reveal a flicker of genuine remorse.

He reached onto the table, picked up a clean linen napkin, and gently handed it to me as fresh tears spilled over my cheeks.

"Can you write, Emily?" he asked softly.

I nodded quickly, my chest heaving with silent sobs.

Luca reached inside his suit coat, retrieved a heavy silver Montblanc pen, and slid a blank menu card across the table.

"Tell me what was inside the manila envelope she took from the piano," Luca ordered.

Vanessa lunged forward, her fingers clawing toward the paper before I could touch it.

"Don't let that manipulative little tramp write lies about me!" Vanessa shrieked, dropping every ounce of her polished etiquette.

Marco moved instantly, catching Vanessa by the wrist before she could touch the table.

He didn't hurt her, but his grip was steel, forcing her backward until she collapsed onto an adjacent armchair.

"Sit down, Miss Bellini," Marco warned, his tone flat and unyielding.

"Mr. Moretti didn't give you permission to stand."

My hands were trembling so violently that the first stroke of the pen tore slightly through the heavy cream paper.

I forced my fingers to steady, remembering the suffocating terror of Julian’s leather-gloved hands crushing my throat.

I remembered Vanessa standing over me, whispering that if I ever made a sound, my younger brother would disappear into Lake Michigan.

I wrote three simple sentences on the back of the engagement menu:

She was tearing the felt padding from the lower soundboard.

She found the ledger your brother left behind before his car crash.

She said she was going to burn it before the wedding.

I slid the card back across the mahogany surface toward Luca.

As Luca read the lines, the color drained from his face, replaced by a terrible, ashen fury.

His older brother, Matteo, had died eight months ago in a fiery collision on the interstate.

Everyone in the city believed it was an unfortunate accident caused by icy roads and brake failure.

Matteo had kept meticulous personal ledgers detailing every financial transaction, offshore trust, and political bribe in the state.

Those ledgers had vanished the night of the crash, sparking a silent, brutal war for control within the syndicate.

Luca lifted his eyes from the card, his gaze locking onto Vanessa with the finality of a loaded gun.

"The ledger," Luca whispered, the words trembling with repressed rage.

"Matteo’s ledger was hidden inside the antique Steinway."

"My brother hid it there because he knew only one person in this house had the keys to tune that specific soundboard."

He looked down at me, realization settling heavily over his features.

"Your father tuned that piano the week before Matteo died," Luca stated quietly.

I nodded, the agony in my throat entirely forgotten as the dark truth finally clawed its way into the open.

Vanessa began to tremble violently, her polished facade completely shattered.

"Luca, listen to me," she pleaded, tears of genuine terror now spilling down her cheeks.

"My father made me do it!"

"The Bellini family is drowning in debt, and Matteo had evidence that my father had been skimming twenty percent from the docks!"

"If that ledger came to light, you would have wiped out our entire bloodline!"

"I was trying to protect our marriage! I was trying to wipe the slate clean so we could start fresh without past blood between us!"

Luca stood up, towering over the room like an angel of death.

"You didn't protect our marriage, Vanessa," Luca said, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling.

"You conspired with the men who severed the brake lines on my brother’s vehicle."

"And then you strangled a defenseless girl whose only crime was remembering where my brother placed his trust."

He turned to Marco and pointed toward the trembling socialite.

"Take her to the lower cellar," Luca commanded.

"Call her father and inform him that the wedding is canceled, the alliance is void, and he has until sunrise to leave this state."
