Chapter 10 - THE DAWN OVER LAKE MICHIGAN AND THE NEW CHAPTER

The first pale streaks of amber and violet dawn broke slowly over the frozen surface of Lake Michigan, cutting through the heavy autumn mist and casting long, brilliant shafts of light across the manicured lawns of the Moretti estate.
Inside the grand kitchen, the air was warm and filled with the rich, comforting aroma of freshly roasted Colombian coffee beans and toasted artisan sourdough bread.
Robert Keller, looking a little pale but stubbornly refusing to sit down, stood by the stainless-steel prep counter wearing his crisp white chef’s jacket, carefully whisking a bowl of heavy cream while issuing sharp, cheerful instructions to the morning sous-chefs.
“A little faster on the whip, boys! We have an entirely new brunch menu to prepare for Mr. Moretti today, and I want everything absolute perfection!”
Standing near the newly repaired pantry window—where the temporary sheet of plywood had already been replaced with reinforced, bulletproof glass—Sophie Hayes poured a cup of black coffee from a silver percolator, watching the morning light dance across the courtyard cobblestones.
She wore a tailored black business suit instead of her old white maid’s apron, the heavy silver master key ring resting securely in her jacket pocket, clinking softly with every breath she took.
The events of the previous night felt like a surreal, distant nightmare—a terrifying trial by fire that had burned away her old life of constant debt, fear, and insecurity, leaving behind something strong, unyielding, and entirely her own.
As the heavy oak service doors swung open, Luca Moretti walked into the kitchen, dressed casually in a dark charcoal cashmere sweater and tailored slacks, looking more like a quiet corporate CEO than a ruthless syndicate emperor.
The entire kitchen staff instantly fell silent, bowing their heads in quiet respect as he passed.
Luca walked straight across the room, stopping two feet away from Sophie, his dark eyes surveying her new attire with a look of quiet, approving satisfaction.
“Good morning, Sophie,” Luca said, his voice carrying clearly over the hum of the espresso machines.
“Good morning, Mr. Moretti,” she replied, offering a confident, professional smile that held no trace of the trembling fear she had felt twenty-four hours ago.
“The morning reports from the shipping docks have cleared,” Luca noted, sliding a slim leather folder onto the counter beside her coffee cup.
“And Mrs. Carter tells me you’ve already audited the east wing supply inventory before seven o’clock.”
“An efficient household starts with an organized kitchen, sir,” Sophie quoted smoothly, picking up the folder with steady fingers.
“Words my father used to live by,” Luca murmured, a rare, genuine warmth softening the hard lines of his face.

He raised his own porcelain coffee cup toward her in a silent toast.
“Welcome home, Sophie.”
