Chapter 8 - THE WHISPER IN THE KITCHEN AND THE MIDNIGHT RETREAT

Back at the Moretti estate, deep underground in the secure subterranean medical wing, the heavy steel security doors remained firmly shut against the outside world.
Sophie Hayes sat on the edge of a narrow, sterile examination cot, staring blankly at the clean white bandage wrapped securely around her left forearm.
The stinging pain had subsided into a dull, rhythmic throb, numbed slightly by the mild sedative Dr. Harris had administered ten minutes earlier at Luca’s explicit command.
Yet her mind remained hyper-alert, replaying every single second of the evening’s terrifying sequence—the shattering of the pantry glass, Robert Keller gasping for air on the cold tile floor, and Vanessa’s murderous glares across the dining room table.
Mrs. Carter sat in a metal chair beside the cot, gently holding a warm cup of herbal tea between her wrinkled hands, her face etched with deep lines of worry.
“Drink a little more of this, child,” the old housekeeper whispered softly, her voice warm and maternal.
“Mr. Moretti has everything under control upstairs. You’re safe down here. Nobody can touch you.”
Sophie swallowed a small sip of the tea, though her throat felt tight and dry.
“Mrs. Carter... do you think Robert is going to be alright?”
The housekeeper hesitated, her eyes flickering away for a brief moment before she forced a reassuring smile.
“Dr. Harris received a secure update from the private clinic downtown not twenty minutes ago. Robert’s heart took a severe strain from the shock and the fall, but he’s stabilized. He’s resting, and he’s going to make a full recovery.”
Sophie let out a long, shuddering breath, the tension in her shoulders easing by a fraction.
“Thank God,” she whispered.
“He’s been with the family since Mr. Luca was a boy,” Mrs. Carter murmured, looking down at her teacup.
“He’s more than just a head chef to this household; he’s the only real father figure Luca had left after the old man passed away. That’s why Vanessa made him her primary target. She knew Robert would never let her sink her claws into the family accounts without a fight.”
Sophie gripped the edge of the examination cot with her uninjured hand.
“She threatened to bury me in an unmarked grave right beside him if I said a single word about what happened in the kitchen.”
“I know, child,” Mrs. Carter said gently, placing a withered, comforting hand over Sophie’s trembling fingers.
“People like Vanessa Bellini think wealth and status make them untouchable. They believe the working staff are nothing more than pieces of furniture to be used, broken, and thrown away when they become inconvenient.”
The housekeeper paused, looking up toward the heavy steel ceiling overhead as a faint, muffled vibration echoed down through the concrete foundations of the estate.
“But they don't understand how deeply rooted the Moretti family is in this city. You stood your ground, Sophie. You protected Robert, and you told the truth when it mattered most. That’s something Luca will never forget.”
Sophie looked down at her white bandage, wondering what her future in this grand, terrifying household would look like once the dust finally settled.
She had started the day as a replaceable agency temp, struggling to pay her rent and her mother’s mortgage in Peoria.
Now, she was the sole witness to a syndicate conspiracy that had just blown the Moretti family wide open.
Before she could dwell on the uncertainty of tomorrow, the heavy steel security door of the medical wing buzzed loudly.
The electronic latch clicked back, and the heavy iron barrier swung slowly open, revealing a towering security guard standing in the threshold.
“Mrs. Carter,” the guard said, nodding respectfully.
“Mr. Moretti has returned from downtown. He has issued his final orders regarding Miss Bellini and the east wing. And he requested that Sophie join him in his private study as soon as she’s cleared to walk.”
May you like
Sophie’s heart gave a nervous flutter, but she didn't hesitate.
She slid off the examination cot, smoothed down her spare white apron, and prepared to face the master of the house one last time.
