Chapter 13 - The Architecture of Betrayal

Nico walked over to the vintage rabbit-ear television set on the sideboard and clicked the rotary knob.
The screen hummed with static before resolving into a high-definition news broadcast from the state capital.
The banner scrolling across the bottom of the screen was bright crimson:
BREAKING NEWS: ARMED SYNDICATE RAID AT BLACKWOOD PSYCHIATRIC LEAVES FOUR INJURED.
Standing at a mahogany podium in front of the Metropolitan Police Headquarters was Deputy Police Commissioner Garrett Vance.
He was dressed in a pristine navy suit, flanked by two dozen high-ranking uniformed commanders and state troopers.
Beside him, looking grim and exhausted, stood Captain Richard Vale in a dark civilian overcoat.
Vance leaned toward the bank of microphones, his voice carrying the deep, resonant cadence of righteous authority.
"At approximately two-fifteen this morning, armed operatives belonging to the Romano crime syndicate executed a coordinated assault on the Blackwood Psychiatric Facility," Vance announced to the flashing cameras.
"Their objective was the abduction of a material state witness and the silencing of long-term medical staff."
"During this violent breach, Nicholas Romano was assisted by an embedded domestic operative identified as Claire Parker."
A photograph of Claire appeared on the upper corner of the screen.
It was her high school yearbook photograph, juxtaposed next to a state mugshot placeholder marked: ARMED AND EXTREMELY DANGEROUS.
"Claire Parker is the daughter of a disgraced former officer," Vance continued, his expression hardening into practiced sorrow.
"Tragically, our intelligence indicates she was radicalized and compromised by the Romano family while serving in their private household."
"I have just spoken with the Governor."
"An executive emergency decree has been signed."
"A statewide shoot-on-sight directive is now in effect for Nicholas Romano, Claire Parker, and their associates."
"To the citizens of this state, I promise you this:"
"The Romano reign of terror ends today."
"I will not rest until these terrorists are brought to justice, whether in handcuffs or in body bags."
Vance raised his right hand to emphasize his pledge to the press corps.
On the screen, his black leather glove covered his fingers completely, hiding the crushed knuckles from the world.
Nico reached out and switched the television set off.
The room plunged back into profound, ringing silence.
"A shoot-on-sight decree," Nico said, his voice deathly quiet.
"He bypassed the district attorney, bypassed the grand jury, and turned the entire state police force into his personal hit squad."
"He's panicking," Daniel whispered from the sofa, struggling to sit up.
Claire rushed to her father's side, propping his shoulders against the worn cushions.
"Why is he panicking, Dad?" she asked.
"Because the election is in seventy-two hours," Daniel explained, his eyes fixed on the leather briefcase.
"Vance has thirty million dollars of syndicate money laundered through his campaign finance committees."
"If the state board certifies his election on Tuesday, he receives executive immunity as Governor."
"He can pardon his own subordinates, dismiss the attorney general, and permanently seal every file Anna left behind."
"He knows I'm out of Blackwood."
"He knows that as long as I am breathing, his entire empire is built on quicksand."
Nico turned away from the window, looking at the papers spread across the table.
"We cannot reach a court," Nico said.
"Every courthouse in the capital is ringed with state troopers under Vance's direct command."
"If we walk into a federal building, we will be cut down in the lobby before we can show our identifications."
Claire stood up, her gaze shifting from the documents to the television screen, then to Nico.
A cold, crystalline certainty settled over her mind.
"Then we don't go to a courthouse," Claire said.
Nico looked at her, his eyebrows drawing together.
"What are you thinking, Claire?"
"Vance is holding his final gubernatorial victory gala tonight at seven o'clock," Claire said, pointing to the television guide lying on the shelf.
"At the Grand Metropolitan Hotel."
"Four hundred donors."
"Every major television network in the country will have their mobile satellite trucks parked outside the ballroom."
"The national press corps will be inside the hall."
"He built a fortress of television cameras to protect his image," she said, her voice steady and resolute.
"We use his fortress against him."
Nico stared at her, a slow, predatory smile touching his lips for the first time in eighteen days.
"You want to walk into the middle of his coronation and broadcast the murder on live national television."
"I don't just want to broadcast it," Claire said, looking down at her father.
"I want the entire world to see the man who killed Michael Romano."
"I want them to see his right hand."
"And I want Captain Richard Vale to be standing right beside him when the handcuffs go on."
Daniel looked up at his daughter, his eyes shining with awe and pride.
"Anna had a broadcast override key," Daniel said softly.
"Inside the secret pocket of the briefcase."
Claire reached into the back lining of the case and felt a hard, rectangular plastic card stamped with gold circuitry.
It was an emergency press-pool master access keycard from the State Broadcast Guild.
"Nicholas," Daniel said, looking at the young mafia boss.
"Can your men get us through the service entrance of the Grand Metropolitan?"
Nico checked his watch, then chambered a round into his weapon with a sharp, definitive click.
"My family built that hotel fifty years ago, Daniel," Nico said smoothly.
"We own every service elevator, every linen chute, and every circuit breaker in the basement."
"If we are going to a gala..."
May you like
Nico looked at Claire with deep, unwavering respect.
"We are going to make sure the guest of honor never leaves the stage."
