Chapter 8 - The Vault of the Forgotten

The grandfather clock in the central hall of the dark estate chimed two in the morning.

The mansion was lit only by three kerosene lanterns placed on the wide library table.

Outside, the storm had turned into a relentless, freezing downpour that battered the leaded glass windows.

On the mahogany table lay a detailed county map, a set of keys, and the blue notebook taken from Maria's sewing room.

Louise sat with a heavy wool shawl pulled over her shoulders, her fingers tracing the edge of an old address book.

"Blackwood Psychiatric is not a hospital, Nicholas," Louise warned, her voice grave.

"It was built sixty years ago as a maximum-security ward for criminally insane state offenders."

"Twelve years ago, after the state scandals, half the facility was decommissioned."

"The remaining west wing was converted into a contracted long-term psychiatric containment unit."

"It is run by private contractors who answer directly to the Department of Corrections."

"To the people Richard Vale controls," Claire said, leaning over the table.

Her uniform was gone.

She had changed into a pair of dark denim jeans, a black wool sweater, and heavy work boots borrowed from the estate storage.

Her hair was pulled back into a tight braid at the nape of her neck.

"How could my father be alive in that place for twelve years without anyone knowing?" Claire asked, her voice cracking.

"How could he never write?"

"How could he never try to escape?"

"Heavy neurological suppression," Louise answered, looking up with sad, weary eyes.

"Anna Mercer told me about Blackwood before she died."

"They use clinical sedation."

"They register the inmates under administrative John Doe profiles or false identities provided by cooperating judges."

"Under the name Thomas Keller, Daniel Morgan doesn't legally exist."

"He is just an indigent schizophrenic ward of the state who has no family, no visitors, and no legal representation."

"Every thirty days, a state doctor signs a renewal form stating the patient is unfit for release or transfer."

"And the state pays the facility sixty thousand dollars a year to keep the ghost asleep in the basement."

Nico loaded a second magazine into his Glock and slid it into his shoulder holster.

He was wearing a black tactical jacket over a dark sweater, his dark eyes shadowed with exhaustion and cold rage.

"We cannot breach Blackwood with force," Nico said, looking at the map.

"The facility has reinforced steel doors, electronic magnetic locks, and twenty private armed guards."

"If we show up with six cars and shotguns, they hit the alarm, the local sheriff responds in four minutes, and we get trapped inside."

"Then how do we get him out?" Claire asked.

"We don't break in," Louise said softly, turning a yellowed page in her small book.

"We use the side door."

She placed an aged business card on the center of the table.

The card was printed on heavy ivory cardstock, embossed with a medical caduceus.

DR. EVELYN STONE — CHIEF OF PSYCHIATRIC RESIDENCY (RETIRED).

"Evelyn Stone was Michael's godmother," Louise explained.

"She retired from Blackwood eight years ago, but her nephew, Dr. Robert Stone, is currently the night medical director."

"Robert owes his medical license to my late husband."

"Twenty years ago, Robert hit a pedestrian while driving under the influence during his residency."

"My husband made sure the police report disappeared and the victim's family received a private endowment."

"Robert has never forgotten that debt."

"Will he help us?" Claire asked, hope flaring wildly in her chest.

"He will open the service entrance on the river side," Louise said.

"He will give us fifteen minutes of unmonitored access to Ward Four."

"After that, the automated shift log resets, and the electronic audit system notifies the central desk."

Nico picked up the card, memorized the handwritten number on the back, and looked at Claire.

"You are not coming," Nico said bluntly.

Claire stepped forward, her eyes flashing with sudden, fierce anger.

"Excuse me?"

"You stay here with Louise," Nico repeated.

"Marco's men will take you both to the safe house in the hills before the state team hits this estate."

"I will go to Blackwood with three men, extract your father, and bring him to the cabin."

"No," Claire said firmly, her voice leaving no room for negotiation.

"Claire, this is not a domestic errand," Nico said, his voice rising slightly.

"If something goes wrong inside that ward, people will die."

"I don't care," Claire said, staring directly into his dark eyes without flinching.

"That is my father."

"He spent twelve years rotting in a locked room because he tried to solve your uncle's murder."

"My mother died three years ago thinking he abandoned us."

"I lived my entire youth believing my father didn't love me enough to stay."

"If he is alive in that hellhole, I am the first face he is going to see when he opens his eyes."

"And besides," she added, her voice dropping into a determined whisper, "if he is chemically suppressed, he won't respond to a stranger with a gun."

"He will panic."

"He will scream for the guards."

"The only person who can keep Daniel Morgan calm enough to walk out of that building on his own feet is me."

Nico stared at her for several long seconds.

The silence stretched between them, heavy with the weight of twelve years of unresolved blood and lies.

In that moment, Claire Parker was no longer the quiet maid who baked cookies with his niece.

She was Daniel Morgan's daughter: stubborn, unyielding, and completely unafraid of the violence surrounding them.

Nico slowly zipped his jacket.

"If I tell you to run," he said, "you run."

"If I tell you to drop to the floor, you drop."

"Do not hesitate."

"Do not look back."

"Do you understand me?"

"I understand," Claire said, pulling her gloves on.

Louise reached out and caught Claire's wrist, her old hand surprisingly warm against the cold leather.

"Bring him back, Claire," the old woman whispered, her voice trembling slightly.

"Bring Daniel home."

"And tell him... tell him Michael never broke."

Claire nodded, swallowing the lump in her throat.

Nico picked up a heavy black duffel bag from the floor, threw the strap over his shoulder, and checked his watch.

"It's two-twenty."

"The extraction vehicle is parked in the lower orchard."

"We have fifty minutes before the shift change at Blackwood."

They walked out into the cold, howling rain, the heavy oak doors of the Romano estate locking behind them in the dark.
