Chapter 14 - THE PATRIARCH'S RECKONING

The silence in the seventieth-floor boardroom was so absolute that the hum of the ventilation system sounded like an aircraft turbine.

Raymond Romano dropped the electronic stylus onto the glass table, where it rolled silently before falling to the carpet.

"Father..." Raymond stammered, his lips quivering as he took two involuntary steps backward against the panoramic window.

"You... you were in cardiac arrest... the doctors said—"

"The doctors you paid to falsify my death certificate, Raymond?" Samuel asked, his voice steadying with every breath as the adrenaline cleared his mind.

Matteo pushed the wheelchair slowly down the long aisle between the rows of frozen corporate executives.

Claire Bennett stepped into the center of the room, unhooking the encrypted laptop from her tactical belt and slamming it down onto the center of the rosewood table.

She plugged the interface cable directly into the room’s high-definition multimedia presentation hub.

The massive ninety-eight-inch display screens along the walnut-paneled walls flickered to life in unison.

"Every member of this board will look at the screens immediately," Claire commanded, her voice ringing with undisputed legal authority.

"I am Detective Claire Bennett, Organized Crime Task Force."

"What you are looking at is the forensic digital ledger retrieved from Julian Reed’s private archives thirty minutes ago."

The screens displayed thousands of internal transaction records, offshore wire transfers, and fraudulent shipping manifests.

Red highlight boxes illuminated Raymond Romano’s private signature linked directly to shell corporations in Macao, Panama, and the Cayman Islands.

Below those transfers were four dozen encrypted communications between Raymond Romano and Deputy Chief Frank Miller.

"For the past thirty-six months," Claire continued, stepping toward the head of the table, "Raymond Romano has systematically embezzled one hundred and forty million dollars from the family trust."

"To cover the deficit before the annual audit, he entered into an illicit logistics partnership with an international narcotics syndicate, utilizing the Romano harbor terminals."

"When Samuel Romano discovered the breach, Raymond Romano and Deputy Chief Miller coordinated a conspiracy to eliminate the patriarch, assassinate the family attorney, and frame an undercover state officer for the execution."

A chorus of horrified murmurs erupted among the board members, several senior directors standing up and backing away from Raymond in disgust.

"This is fabricated!" Miller shouted, stepping forward with his left hand reaching behind his back toward a concealed backup weapon.

"This woman is an unauthorized rogue detective who broke chain of custody!"

"Security, disarm her right now!"

None of the security guards moved an inch.

"Don't move your hand, Miller," Claire said, her service weapon clearing its holster in a blink of an eye, the barrel locking dead-center onto Miller’s forehead.

"If your fingers touch that grip, I will end you where you stand, exactly the way you ended my father twenty years ago."

Miller froze, his left hand suspended an inch from the small of his back, his face twisting into a mask of bitter, venomous hatred.

"Your father was a fool, Bennett," Miller spat, drops of saliva flying from his lips.

"He died for nothing in a burning car, and you're going to die in this room for an old mobster who doesn't give a damn about your badge!"

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the boardroom were thrown open once more with concussive force.

Twelve heavily armed agents wearing dark tactical windbreakers with the bright yellow letters 'FBI' flooded into the corridor, carbines held at the low ready.

Behind them walked the United States Attorney for the Southern District, flanked by the Director of the State Police Internal Affairs Division.

Julian Reed, his head bandaged and his arm secured in a medical sling, stepped through the doorway supported by two federal marshals.

"Deputy Chief Frank Miller," the US Attorney announced, his voice carrying the full weight of federal jurisdiction into the room.

"By order of the Federal Grand Jury, you are under arrest for racketeering, public corruption, federal wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit capital murder."

Two federal agents moved forward swiftly, pinning Miller against the rosewood table, disarming him, and ratcheting heavy steel handcuffs around his uninjured wrist.

Miller did not fight; he slumped forward, his eyes glazed with the realization that his thirty-year empire of municipal bribery was completely shattered.

Raymond Romano collapsed onto his knees on the carpet, burying his face in his trembling hands and sobbing hysterically like a terrified child.

"Matteo... please..." Raymond wept, looking up toward his nephew with tear-streaked eyes.

"I had no choice... they were going to kill me... the people in Macao—"

Matteo stopped beside his kneeling uncle, looking down at him with an expression of profound, cold pity.

"You had a family, Raymond," Matteo said quietly.

"You chose the money."

Matteo turned his back on his uncle and stepped to the side of his grandfather's wheelchair.

Samuel Romano looked at his youngest son for three long, agonizing seconds, then slowly looked away toward the rising sun over the East River.

"Take him away," Samuel said, his voice dropping to a whisper that closed an entire era of family history.

"And strip his name from every deed this city will ever print."
