Chapter 9 - THE HEIRS AND THE WOLVES

Before they could reach the saltmarsh facility, the city itself began to move against them.

Inside the brownstone's study, Claire connected Julian’s micro-SD card to an encrypted laptop she had retrieved from her vehicle’s tactical reserve kit.

The monitor flickered to life, illuminating the dark mahogany bookshelves in cool blue light.

A priority news alert flashed across the screen from the metropolitan police network.

Claire clicked the live feed.

On the screen stood Raymond Romano, dressed in an immaculate black suit, standing at a podium inside the grand lobby of the Romano Corporate Tower.

Microphones from twelve major news networks were thrust in front of his face.

Beside him stood two high-ranking city officials and an attorney with the city prosecutor’s office.

Raymond looked directly into the cameras with an expression of profound, theatrical grief.

"At approximately eight-thirty last night, my beloved father, Samuel Romano, suffered a catastrophic coronary incident at our family residence," Raymond announced, his voice trembling with rehearsed sorrow.

"While undergoing treatment at Saint Jude Memorial Hospital, an armed abduction occurred."

"Preliminary investigations indicate that my nephew, Matteo Romano, acting in collusion with a compromised undercover police detective named Claire Bennett, forcibly removed my father from medical care."

Matteo stared at the screen, his breathing turning shallow and deadly.

"He is controlling the narrative," Matteo whispered.

"Listen to him," Claire said, turning up the audio.

"We believe my nephew is suffering from acute psychological distress following financial disputes within the family estate," Raymond continued smoothly.

"He has taken my father hostage to extort control of the family trust."

"A city-wide fugitive warrant has been issued for Matteo Romano and Detective Claire Bennett."

"Shoot-on-sight authorization has been granted to all tactical task forces under the direct supervision of Deputy Chief Frank Miller."

Claire closed the laptop with a sharp snap.

"They just turned the entire metropolitan police force into their personal hunting pack."

"Every cruiser on the road is looking for this car, our faces, and my badge."

"How do we reach Pelham Bay without passing through five police checkpoints?" Matteo asked.

Claire walked over to the desk, her mind working through tactical protocols at lightning speed.

"We don't drive across the city."

"What do you mean?"

"The saltmarshes border the tidal estuary of the East River," Claire said, pulling up a digital satellite topographical map on her phone.

"The municipal pumping station has a private drainage slipway that connects directly to the commercial barge canals."

"Water routes are monitored by the harbor patrol, not the street precinct cruisers."

Matteo’s eyes narrowed with sudden understanding.

"My father’s old boathouse at Hunt’s Point."

"Does it have an operational vessel?"

"A twin-engine shallow-draft offshore boat," Matteo said.

"Black hull, no navigation lights, used for intercepting cargo before the family went legitimate."

"Can it navigate the shallow marshes at low tide?" Claire asked.

"It was built specifically for that marsh," Matteo answered.

Julian groaned from the sofa, struggling to sit upright.

"You can't... you can't just raid the pumping station," Julian wheezed, holding his broken ribs.

"Even if you secure Samuel, Raymond has scheduled an emergency meeting of the Romano Syndicate Board for six-thirty AM."

"If Samuel's signature isn't challenged before the board officially votes to ratify Raymond as the sole conservator, the legal title transfers automatically."

"Once the state records that transfer, Raymond owns the docks permanently."

"Even if Samuel survives, he will have no legal standing to reclaim the assets."

Claire looked at the clock on the mantelpiece.

Four-fifteen AM.

"We have two hours and fifteen minutes," Claire said.

"We extract Samuel from the saltmarsh facility, and then we take him directly to the corporate tower before the board can vote."

"That sounds impossible, Detective," Matteo said, a faint, dark smirk touching the corner of his lips.

"Impossibility is standard operational procedure for undercover officers, Mr Romano."

Claire turned to Julian, placing a bottle of water and his cell phone on the table beside him.

"Stay inside this house, Julian."

"Lock the deadbolt behind us."

"If we do not contact you by seven o'clock, transmit the files on that micro-SD card directly to the regional office of the FBI."

Julian nodded weakly, his hand trembling as he touched the micro-drive.

"God protect both of you," the lawyer whispered.

Claire and Matteo descended the rear stairs into the shadowed alleyway.

The freezing rain had intensified into a biting sleet that coated the brick walls with slick glaze.

They abandoned the Dodge Charger in the garage, taking an unmarked commercial utility van that Isabella Rossi had kept registered under a floral supply company.

Matteo took the wheel, navigating the back streets with surgical precision, avoiding every major boulevard and highway interchange.

In the rear of the van, Claire prepared their equipment.

She checked her service weapon, loaded three spare magazines into her tactical belt, and prepared two pre-filled syringes of atropine and epinephrine from her medical trauma kit.

If they found Samuel in cardiac arrest, she had less than four minutes to restart his heart.

She looked across the dark interior of the van at Matteo’s reflection in the rearview mirror.

He drove with absolute calm, but his knuckles were white against the steering wheel.

"You loved your grandfather very much," Claire said quietly.

Matteo was silent for several blocks, the wipers sweeping rhythmically across the glass.

"When my father died in that warehouse explosion ten years ago, the rest of the family wanted to start an all-out war that would have turned this city into a graveyard," Matteo said softly.

"My uncle Raymond wanted to purchase automatic weapons and hire mercenaries from Philadelphia."

"Samuel stood in the middle of our dining hall, pulled his personal weapon from his coat, and threw it onto the table."

"He said, 'The blood stops with my son. We build something clean, or we die like animals in the street.'"

Matteo turned the van down an unpaved road toward the Hunt’s Point industrial waterfront.

"Samuel gave up everything he built to ensure I wouldn't spend my life running from federal indictments."

"He protected me from the family's poison."

"Now it's my turn to protect him."

Claire looked down at her badge gleaming in the dim light of the dashboard.

For four months, she had viewed the Romano family as a criminal syndicate waiting to be dismantled.

Now, standing in the cold shadows between corrupt law enforcement and ruthless greed, she realized that the only person upholding honor in this city was an eighty-one-year-old former crime lord.

The van pulled to a stop beside a decaying boathouse hidden beneath the towering piers of the railway bridge.

The water of the East River churned below them, black, freezing, and violent under the storm.

Matteo killed the engine and looked at her.

"Time to go to work, Detective."
