Chapter 3 - The Price of a Pulse

The third-floor library was lined with floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves and heavy green velvet draperies.

Unlike the ruined foyer downstairs, the library smelled of rich leather, pipe tobacco, and single-malt scotch.

A massive fireplace crackled in the center of the wall, radiating waves of deep, comforting heat.

Norah sat stiffly on the edge of a chesterfield sofa, clutching a bowl of warm antiseptic water.

A female physician from the family’s private medical staff had just finished wrapping her split knuckles in sterile white gauze.

Mrs. Gable stood trembling near the door, her hands wringing her apron into tight knots.

The older woman’s face was completely drained of color, terrified that her hire had brought ruin upon the household.

Daniel dismissed the doctor and Mrs. Gable with a simple wave of his fingers.

The heavy oak door clicked shut, leaving Norah alone with the head of the Russo syndicate.

Daniel walked over to the antique crystal decanter resting on his desk and poured two fingers of amber whiskey into a tumbler.

He walked across the Persian rug and set the glass on the low table directly in front of Norah.

""Drink it,"" Daniel said.

""I don't drink while I'm on duty, Mr. Russo,"" Norah said quietly, keeping her spine rigid against the sofa cushions.

""You are no longer on duty as a maid, Norah,"" he replied, taking a seat in the leather wingback chair opposite her.

""Consider it medicine for the shock.""

Norah looked at the amber liquid, then at the man sitting before her.

She reached out with her bandaged hand, picked up the crystal glass, and swallowed the scotch in one sharp gulp.

The alcohol burned her throat like kerosene, but it banished the icy numbness lingering in her chest.

Daniel allowed himself a faint, humorless smirk as he leaned back into the leather.

On the desk behind him, an open laptop screen glowed brightly in the firelight.

""Norah Hayes,"" Daniel began, reciting the facts without looking at the screen.

""Born in the Southside. Father abandoned the family when you were seven.""

""Mother, Clara Hayes, worked as a night-shift seamstress until her health collapsed.""

""One older brother, dead at nineteen from gang crossfire.""

""No criminal record. High school diploma with honors, zero arrests, zero bankruptcies.""

He paused, swirling his own drink in his hand.

""Seventy-four thousand dollars in outstanding medical debts, held by a debt acquisition agency called Apex Credit Recovery.""

Norah's hands tightened against her uniform trousers.

""Did your men dig through my trash while I was getting stitched up?"" she asked bitterly.

""It took my technical team eight minutes to pull your tax history, your bank records, and your phone logs,"" Daniel replied smoothly.

""A man who survives three assassination attempts learns to check the foundation before he trusts the floorboards.""

""I'm not an assassin, Mr. Russo,"" Norah said, her voice rising slightly.

""If I wanted you dead, all I had to do was keep scrubbing the marble and wait for the glass to break.""

""I know,"" Daniel said softly.

""That is the only reason you are sitting in this chair instead of hanging from a meat hook in the meatpacking district.""

He set his glass down on the side table with a deliberate, soft click.

""The rifle round that missed my head came from a suppressed bolt-action rifle,"" Daniel explained.

""The shooter set up his hide in the tree line behind the northern ridge.""

""That specific ridge is patrolled by my security teams every twenty minutes on the hour.""

""The shooter bypassed two heat sensors and three motion-tripped cameras without setting off an alarm.""

Norah listened, the cold realization beginning to dawn in her stomach.

""They knew where the blind spots were,"" she murmured.

""They knew where the blind spots were,"" Daniel confirmed, nodding slowly.

""And more importantly, they knew my schedule.""

He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, his dark eyes boring into hers.

""I returned from the port thirty minutes ahead of schedule tonight because a customs meeting ended early.""

""I did not announce my early return over the syndicate radio channels.""

""Only three people knew I would be walking through those front doors at five forty-five.""

Norah felt the hair on her arms stand up.

""Carmine,"" she whispered.

Daniel did not confirm the name, nor did he deny it.

""In my world, loyalty is not an emotional feeling, Norah. It is a mathematical calculation.""

""Whoever ordered that shot paid someone on the inside an immense sum of money.""

""The sniper saw your face when you hit me.""

""They saw a gray-clad maid knock their target out of the kill zone.""

""By tomorrow morning, every faction in this city will know that Daniel Russo is alive because a cleaner had fast hands.""

Norah's breath caught in her throat.

""They're going to come after me,"" she realized, the weight of the danger crashing down on her shoulders.

""They will burn down every building in the Southside until they find you,"" Daniel said without emotion.

""If I give you ten thousand dollars and send you out the back gate right now, you will be dead before midnight.""

""Then why are you telling me this?"" Norah asked, her heart racing.

""Because I am offering you an alternative,"" Daniel said.

""You are going to remain in this house, under my direct protection.""

""You will no longer scrub floors or empty trash bins.""

""You will stay by my side as my personal assistant, serving as a second set of eyes that nobody suspects.""

""Why me?"" Norah asked, bewildered.

""Because you are the only person in this entire compound who had everything to gain by letting me die, yet you chose to hit me instead.""

Daniel rose from his chair and extended his hand toward her.

May you like

""Help me find the snake in my house, Norah.""

""And when this is over, I will wipe every single penny of your mother's debt off the face of the earth.""
