Chapter 9 - The Gilded Serpent

By midnight, the Southside tenement was secured under the protection of eight heavily armed syndicate soldiers loyal to Daniel.

Mrs Morales was escorted safely to a luxury residential hotel downtown, funded permanently by Daniel's private account.

Meanwhile, on the top floor of the Grand Imperial Hotel in the financial district, the city's corrupt elite were gathering for an annual gala.

The event was officially a charity benefit for urban infrastructure, organized by Councilman Paul Vance.

In reality, it was an underground auction where Marco Bellini sold off seized municipal land to offshore shell corporations.

Inside a private penthouse suite three blocks away, Norah stood before a full-length gilded mirror.

She wore an emerald-green silk evening gown with an open back and a high neckline that concealed the bruises on her collarbone.

Her hair had been swept up into an elegant, intricate bun by a private stylist, revealing the sharp line of her jaw.

Diamond drop earrings caught the light, and a silver bracelet masked the sterile gauze wrapped around her right wrist.

Beneath the heavy silk of her floor-length skirt, a compact Beretta was strapped securely to her left thigh with a velvet garter.

Daniel stepped behind her in the mirror, looking devastatingly sharp in a custom-tailored black tuxedo.

He placed his hands lightly on her bare shoulders, his fingers warm against her skin.

""Nobody in that ballroom will see a maid from the Southside, Norah,"" Daniel murmured into her ear.

""They will see an heiress who could buy and sell their entire lineage.""

Norah met his gaze in the glass, feeling the strange, intoxicating thrill of the transformation.

""I don't care about their lineage, Daniel,"" she said quietly.

""I want to look Marco Bellini in the eye when his world burns to the ground.""

Daniel smiled, reaching around her neck to fasten a platinum necklace bearing a single black diamond.

""A woman after my own heart,"" he whispered.

Ten minutes later, their limousine pulled up beneath the grand canopy of the Grand Imperial Hotel.

Valets in red coats scrambled to open the doors as flashbulbs from society photographers lit up the night.

Daniel stepped onto the red carpet first, offering his arm to Norah with aristocratic ease.

Norah took his arm, holding her chin high as they glided through the revolving glass doors and into the grand ballroom.

The room was a dizzying spectacle of crystal chandeliers, flowing champagne towers, and live orchestra music.

Judges, police commissioners, and real estate moguls mingled in clusters, laughing over flute glasses of vintage Dom Perignon.

At the far end of the ballroom, standing near the marble stage, stood Marco Bellini and Councilman Paul Vance.

Marco was holding court with a group of offshore bankers, his face flushed with champagne and arrogance.

Councilman Vance, a silver-haired politician with an immaculate smile, was gesturing toward an architectural model of the Southside redevelopment project.

As Daniel and Norah crossed the polished hardwood floor, the room seemed to lose its breath in waves.

Murmurs rippled through the crowd like wind across a wheat field.

""Is that Russo?"" an elderly appellate judge whispered, lowering his glass in sheer disbelief.

""The word on the street was that Daniel took a sniper round to the head yesterday afternoon.""

""He looks completely untouched,"" another voice muttered from behind a silk fan.

""And who is that breathtaking woman on his arm?""

Daniel and Norah glided straight toward the VIP dais, parting the sea of corrupt socialites like a black knife.

Marco Bellini turned around with a glass of scotch in his hand, his smug expression freezing instantly into a mask of pure terror.

His scotch spilled over his fingers, staining his pristine white cuff.

""Daniel..."" Marco choked out, his throat working frantically as if he had seen a phantom rise from the harbor.

""Marco,"" Daniel greeted him with a polite, razor-sharp smile.

""You look surprised to see me enjoying your hospitality.""

Councilman Vance stepped forward, attempting to smooth over the atmosphere with practiced political charm.

""Mister Russo! We... we didn't expect you to grace our humble charity gala tonight.""

Daniel did not look at Vance; his predatory gaze remained fixed entirely on Marco's trembling hands.

""I wouldn't miss it for the world, Councilman,"" Daniel said smoothly.

""Especially since my associate, Miss Hayes, has taken a deep personal interest in your housing redevelopment portfolio.""

Marco’s eyes dropped to Norah, his pupils dilating with violent recognition.

He recognized the sharp, unforgiving eyes that had locked onto his through the forklift at Pier 42.

He recognized the woman whose hands had swung the iron pry-bar that shattered his gunman’s leg.

""You..."" Marco whispered, his face turning an ashen gray.

""You're the scullery girl.""

Norah took a slow, deliberate step toward Marco, her emerald dress rustling with cold elegance.

She leaned in until she was barely six inches from the underboss's ear, her perfume washing over his terror.

""My mother died in a public ward while you stole her pension checks, Marco,"" Norah whispered, her tone sweet and venomous.

""And tonight, every cent of that stolen blood money is coming out of your hide.""

Before Marco could respond, Norah reached past his arm and deftly lifted a leather briefcase resting on the side table behind him.

Inside that briefcase was the private hardware drive containing the offshore access keys for Apex Holdings.

Marco lunged to grab the handle, but Daniel stepped into his path, catching Marco’s lapel with one immovable hand.

""If you make a scene in front of the press, Marco,"" Daniel warned in a deadly whisper, ""the federal marshals waiting outside will enter this room early.""

Vance looked between them, panic finally cracking his polished political facade.

""What federal marshals?!"" Vance hissed, backing away from the dais.

Norah held the briefcase securely against her hip, smiling directly into the flashing cameras of the arriving reporters.

""The marshals who just received the signed kickback ledgers from Apartment 2B on Forty-Ninth Street, Councilman,"" Norah announced clearly.

A chorus of camera shutters erupted across the ballroom as the grand entrance doors swung open with a deafening bang.

A dozen federal agents in tactical windbreakers, led by the regional special prosecutor, poured into the gala with arrest warrants drawn.

Pandemonium erupted across the marble floor as socialites screamed and spilled champagne in every direction.

Marco Bellini shoved Councilman Vance into the path of the advancing agents, broke through the emergency side exit, and vanished into the hotel service corridors.

""He's running for the rooftop helipad!"" Norah yelled, pointing toward the fire escape door.

Daniel pulled his coat open, revealing the tactical harness beneath his tuxedo jacket.

""Let's make sure he doesn't catch his flight,"" Daniel said, taking Norah's hand as they surged into the darkness of the stairwell.
