Chapter 2 - Whispers of Betrayal in the Corridor

The afternoon sun filtered through the massive stained-glass dome of the Montgomery foyer, casting kaleidoscopic patterns of crimson and gold across the pristine Italian marble floor. Upstairs, hidden from the direct view of the servants but dangerously close to the master landing, Victoria Sterling stood in the shadows of the second-floor gallery, her manicured fingers tightly clutching the silk fabric of her designer gown. Her breathing was shallow, erratic, fueled by a cocktail of panic and malice. She had just overheard a private conversation between Beatrice and Julian in the private study—a conversation that threatened to dismantle her entire grand design in a matter of seconds.

Beatrice’s raspy, commanding voice still echoed in Victoria’s fevered mind. The matriarch had finally decided to act. She had instructed Julian to call their family attorney first thing in the morning to amend the master will, completely cutting Victoria out of the inheritance and stripping her of any legal claim to the Montgomery estate. Furthermore, Beatrice had uncovered damning financial discrepancies pointing directly to Victoria—embezzlement from the Montgomery Foundation funds that Victoria had been funneling into offshore accounts to finance her lavish personal debts. The old woman had looked her dead in the eye just an hour prior, whispering a chilling promise: “You came into this house a parasite, Victoria, and before the week is out, you will leave it with nothing but your shame.”

Victoria’s mind raced with frantic desperation. If that will was amended, her entire life of luxury would vanish like smoke. The society parties, the private jets, the unlimited credit cards, the power—all of it would be ripped away, leaving her exposed as a fraud and a thief. Worse, Julian would cast her aside with cold, corporate indifference once the truth came to light. A dark, reckless panic took root in her chest, whispering insidious solutions to her immediate crisis. If Beatrice were incapacitated—or worse—before the morning meeting with the attorney, the will could not be changed. Better yet, if someone else could be blamed for a tragic accident, Victoria could position herself as the grieving, loyal partner, cementing her place by Julian’s side and inheriting the kingdom by default.

The opportunity presented itself with terrifying speed. Beatrice stepped out of the study, leaning heavily on her ornate, silver-handled mahogany cane, making her slow, deliberate descent toward the grand staircase. The hallway was momentarily deserted, save for Victoria lurking in the architectural alcove, and a young, innocent observer playing quietly near the base of the stairs—seven-year-old Lily, the orphaned daughter of the estate’s late estate manager, whom Beatrice had generously taken in out of the kindness of her heart. Lily was sitting cross-legged on the rug, arranging her porcelain dolls, entirely oblivious to the dark currents swirling around her. Victoria’s eyes locked onto the elderly matriarch’s frail figure poised at the precipice of the grand marble staircase, and without a single shred of human conscience, a diabolical plot formed in her venomous mind.
