Chapter 3 - The Fatal Descent on the Grand Staircase

The silence in the grand foyer was absolute, save for the rhythmic, hollow tapping of Beatrice Montgomery’s cane against the polished marble steps as she began her descent. The lighting was dramatic, casting long, ominous shadows across the sweeping double staircase that served as the architectural crown jewel of the estate. Beatrice moved with cautious dignity, her silver hair catching the amber glow of the crystal chandelier overhead, completely unaware of the approaching danger lurking just behind her in the shadows of the upper landing.

Victoria moved like a ghost, her footsteps muffled by the thick Persian runners lining the upper hallway. She closed the distance with terrifying swiftness, her face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated malice. Just as Beatrice reached the steep middle landing—where the staircase narrowed before plunging down to the main floor—Victoria lunged forward with sudden, ferocious violence. A swift, calculated shove to the small of the old woman’s back shattered the fragile equilibrium of the matriarch. Beatrice let out a sharp, startled gasp that echoed off the vaulted ceiling, her fingers slipping uselessly off the polished wooden banister as her legs buckled beneath her.

Gravity took over with brutal efficiency. Beatrice tumbled forward down the steep flight of marble stairs, her body striking the hard stone steps with sickening thuds, her precious mahogany cane clattering away and spinning wildly across the floor. She finally came to a violent halt at the very bottom of the staircase, crumpled awkwardly against the base of the marble pillars, her silver hair matted with sweat and blood, her breathing coming in ragged, agonizing gasps. For a terrifying moment, the entire world seemed to stop spinning, frozen in a vacuum of shock and horror.

From the upstairs gallery, the estate’s head butler and a young maid froze in sheer terror, their hands flying to their mouths as they witnessed the horrific scene unfold. But down in the foyer, the immediate response was triggered by the sudden clatter. Julian, who had been reviewing corporate documents in the nearby parlor, burst through the double doors, his eyes widening in pure disbelief. He sprinted across the marble floor with desperate speed, dropping to his knees beside his grandmother’s broken body. His face drained of all color, his voice cracking with raw, unbearable agony as he cradled her frail head in his hands, crying out into the silent hall: “Mother—Granny! What happened? Look at me, please, stay with me!”
