Chapter 6 - THE TRAP CLOSES: THE ARREST OF THE CONSPIRATORS

By 2:00 PM, the storm broke across the city in spectacular fashion.

I was sitting in Elena’s hospital room, quietly peeling an orange for my mother—who was resting comfortably, her color slowly returning thanks to proper hydration and medical care—when my phone buzzed violently with a barrage of notifications.

First came a frantic text message from Vanessa, typed in frantic, all-caps panic:

“DANIEL! WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?! My credit cards are all declined! The bank says our accounts are frozen! Are you out of your mind?! Call me back RIGHT NOW!”

Two minutes later, another text followed, dripping with hysterical fury:

“Why are two police officers knocking on the front door asking for me?! Daniel, what did you do?! Fix this right now or you will regret it for the rest of your life!”

I didn’t even bother to reply. I simply blocked her number and watched the live feed from the hidden security cameras in my own living room via my laptop screen.

On the screen, I watched in absolute satisfaction as two uniform police officers, accompanied by a county detective and a female processing officer, stood in my grand foyer. Vanessa was standing in front of them, her face pale, her hair disheveled, screaming indignantly at the top of her lungs, waving her arms in theatrical disbelief.

“This is a ridiculous mistake! I am the mistress of this house! My husband is a wealthy engineer in Saudi Arabia! You have no right to be in my home!” Vanessa shrieked at the detective.

The detective calmly stepped forward, pulled out a pair of gleaming steel handcuffs, and held up a formal arrest warrant signed by a superior court judge.

“Vanessa Sterling, you are under arrest for aggravated elder abuse, grand larceny, forgery, extortion, and systemic financial fraud,” the detective announced, his voice echoing clearly through the high-definition audio feed on my laptop. “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

Vanessa’s jaw dropped. The color drained entirely from her face until she looked like a marble statue. “No... no, this is impossible! Daniel! DANIEL!” she screamed hysterically as the cold steel cuffs snapped securely around her wrists, binding her hands behind her back.

As they marched her out the front door toward the waiting squad car, cameras flashing from local reporters who had somehow caught wind of the high-profile corporate and domestic raid, I calmly closed my laptop lid.

Simultaneously, across town at the corporate headquarters of our engineering firm, federal agents had marched into the executive suite on the top floor. Marcus Vance was dragged out of his corner office in handcuffs, his expensive Italian suit rumpled, his face buried in shame as federal investigators boxed up his computer towers, financial ledgers, and hard drives containing the proof of his multi-million-dollar embezzlement ring.

The empire they had built on deceit, cruelty, and greed had collapsed in less than six hours.
