Chapter 3 - The First Domino Falls in the Boardroom

The morning sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling tinted glass windows of the corporate headquarters on the forty-fifth floor.
The executive boardroom felt stifling, charged with an invisible electric tension that suffocated anyone who walked inside.
Uncle Martin sat at the head of the polished mahogany table, wearing an expensive tailored suit and an expression of manufactured grief.
Daniel stood beside him, clutching a thick leather-bound portfolio containing emergency corporate restructuring proposals.
Vanessa occupied a seat near the middle, tapping her crimson-painted fingernails rhythmically against the polished wood surface.
I rolled into the room precisely at nine o'clock, pushed by a temporary assistant while my gray blanket covered my legs.
Several senior board members lowered their eyes, clearly uncomfortable with participating in a calculated palace coup.
Martin cleared his throat loudly, projecting an aura of heavy familial burden and reluctant leadership.
Good morning, everyone, Martin began, his voice dripping with false empathy and crocodile tears.
We are gathered here today under deeply unfortunate circumstances to address the future of our beloved enterprise.
As you all know, my nephew's tragic accident has left him physically incapacitated and unfit to manage our massive operations.
He paused for dramatic effect, scanning the room to gauge the reactions of the veteran directors.
In accordance with clause fourteen of our corporate charter, I move that we temporarily suspend his voting rights.
Furthermore, I propose transferring full executive authority to an emergency committee led by myself and Daniel.
A heavy silence descended upon the boardroom like a wet blanket dropped from a great height.
Vanessa leaned forward, her lips curving into a predatory smile as she looked directly across the table at me.
It is for his own good, really, Vanessa interjected smoothly, feigning deep emotional distress.
He cannot even manage his own daily basic needs, let alone negotiate multi-million-dollar international trade agreements.
Letting him hold onto the reigns any longer would destroy everything our family has worked decades to build.
I remained perfectly still in my wheelchair, resting my hands motionless on the armrests just as I had rehearsed.
I let them bask in the intoxicating warmth of their premature victory for a few lingering moments.
Do you have any official statement to make before we call for a formal vote, Martin asked me condescendingly.
You still have the right to surrender your position voluntarily and retain a minor advisory title.
It would save everyone a great deal of public embarrassment and legal friction down the road.
I slowly lifted my head, locking my eyes onto my uncle's sweating forehead with chilling calm.
Voluntarily surrender my life's work to a pack of opportunistic jackals? I asked, my voice echoing clearly.
Martin's confident smirk faltered for a fraction of a second before he recovered his composure.
Do not be melodramatic, Arthur, Martin snapped, his patience wearing thin under my steady gaze.
Your medical reports clearly state you will never walk through those doors or manage a single spreadsheet again.
You are finished, and everyone in this room knows it.
Is that an official medical conclusion, Uncle Martin? I inquired, tilting my head slightly.
Or is it simply a convenient fantasy you and Daniel manufactured to justify stealing my controlling shares?
Daniel flinched visibly at my words, his hand trembling slightly as he clutched his leather portfolio.
That is an absurd accusation, Daniel stammered, his voice rising in an unnatural pitch.
We are only trying to protect the company's valuation from plummeting due to your incapacitation.
Protect the company? I repeated coldly, pressing a small hidden button on the underside of my wheelchair armrest.
The massive smart screen mounted on the mahogany wall behind Martin suddenly flicked to life with a sharp click.
High-resolution financial documents, bank wire receipts, and encrypted email threads filled the luminous display.
The room erupted into sudden murmurs of shock as board members scrambled to read the cascading lines of data.
Look closely at screen three, gentlemen, I said, raising my voice to cut through the rising panic.
Those are wire transfers routing proprietary logistical blueprints directly to our primary overseas competitor.
And look at screen four, featuring the signatures authorizing those illegal transactions.
Martin's face drained of all color, turning the pale shade of spoiled milk as he stared at the glowing display.
Daniel gripped the edge of the table so hard his knuckles turned completely white and bloodless.
You... you cannot do this, Martin stuttered, stumbling backward against his ergonomic leather chair.
Those files are... they were secured behind encrypted firewalls!
Firewalls are only as secure as the corrupt insiders willing to sell the passwords, I replied smoothly.
And thanks to your collective greed, my security team downloaded every single digital breadcrumb over the past six months.
Vanessa stood up abruptly from her chair, knocking her glass of water over onto her pristine white designer trousers.
Arthur, you tricked us, she screamed, her carefully constructed mask of elegance shattering completely.
You were never paralyzed at all, you lying monster!
I slowly pushed myself up from the wheelchair, standing tall and steady on my own two feet for the entire room to see.
The gasps of astonishment ricocheted off the boardroom walls as I walked deliberately toward the head of the table.
May you like
Paralysis is such a terribly inconvenient condition, I whispered softly, stopping right beside my trembling uncle.
Especially when you use it to catch rats running out of the woodwork.
