Chapter 4 - The Estate Under Siege

The heavy iron gates of my private estate swung open late that evening, admitting a sleek black sedan carrying uninvited guests.

Back inside the safety of my grand study, I watched the vehicle pull up onto the cobblestone courtyard via the security monitors.

Martin and Vanessa had not wasted any time attempting a desperate counter-strategy after their public humiliation at headquarters.

Stripped of their corporate titles and facing imminent federal arrest warrants, they had arrived to demand a private settlement.

Marcus stood quietly beside my desk, checking the clip of his service weapon with smooth, practiced efficiency.

The federal marshals are positioned ten minutes out, boss, Marcus reported without looking up from his tablet.

Should we let these rats wander inside, or intercept them at the front entrance before they dirty your carpets?

Let them in, Marcus, I replied calmly, adjusting the cuffs of my crisp white dress shirt.

Every desperate threat they utter tonight will serve as additional evidence for the prosecuting attorney.

A few moments later, heavy, frantic pounding echoed against the massive oak doors of the study before they swung wide open.

Vanessa stormed into the room, her hair disheveled and her designer makeup streaked with genuine panic and fury.

Behind her shuffled Uncle Martin, looking ten years older and completely defeated by the sudden collapse of his empire.

How could you humiliate us like that in front of the entire board? Vanessa shrieked, slamming her palm down on my desk.

You played us like fools, Arthur, acting like a helpless cripple just to set an elaborate trap!

I remained seated behind my desk, offering them a cold, unimpressed stare that only fueled their escalating hysteria.

I simply gave you the exact opportunity you needed to reveal your true character, Vanessa, I replied evenly.

You made your intentions crystal clear the moment you called me worthless in front of a room full of strangers.

Martin stepped forward, his voice trembling with a desperate mix of anger and pathetic supplication.

Arthur, listen to reason, my boy, Martin pleaded, resting his palms flat on the wooden surface.

We are family, despite our differences and mistakes along the way.

If you drop the federal charges and sign over a modest equity severance package, we can quietly sweep this under the rug.

Otherwise, we will drag your name through the mud in every media outlet across the country.

We will claim you orchestrated a malicious entrapment scheme while suffering from severe psychological instability.

Before I could answer, the side door of the study clicked open, and Clara stepped inside carrying a silver tea tray.

She moved with absolute grace and calm, completely unfazed by the hostile energy radiating from my disgraced relatives.

I never realized blackmail sounded so pathetic when spoken out loud by desperate amateurs, Clara said softly.

She placed a steaming cup of tea on the corner of my desk without spilling a single drop.

Vanessa whipped around, her eyes flashing with pure venom as she glared at the young housemaid with unbridled hatred.

You! Vanessa hissed, taking a threatening step toward Clara.

This is all your fault, you little spy, whispering in his ear and feeding him information behind our backs!

Clara did not flinch or back away an inch, meeting Vanessa's furious gaze with quiet, unshakable resolve.

I never had to spy on anyone, Miss Vanessa, Clara replied steadily, her voice calm and clear.

Truth has a funny way of making itself known when arrogant people think nobody is paying attention to them.

Vanessa let out a feral shriek of rage, lunging forward with her hand raised to strike Clara across the face.

In a blur of motion, I stood up from my chair and caught Vanessa's wrist mid-air with an iron grip.

Do not ever raise your hand in my home again, I warned, my voice dropping to a dangerously low register.

Vanessa struggled violently against my grip, her face contorted in an ugly mask of pure malice and desperation.

You think you have won everything, Arthur, she spat, her voice echoing off the high vaulted ceiling.

You think your money and your clever traps make you invincible against people who have nothing left to lose.

Red and blue flashing lights suddenly illuminated the dark windows of the study as multiple federal vehicles swarmed the courtyard.

Heavy footsteps echoed up the grand staircase, followed by firm knocks on the heavy oak doors.

The game is over, Vanessa, I said quietly, releasing her wrist and stepping back toward my desk.

Your final performance has officially reached its conclusion.
