Chapter 8 - The Dawn Ambush

Dawn arrived over Lake Michigan like a bruised, gray wound across the horizon.
By seven in the morning, the grand foyer of the Moretti estate was filled with the heavy thud of expensive leather dress shoes.
The ornate double front doors were thrown open with arrogant force.
Walking into the marble foyer was Antonio Bellini, the patriarch of the Bellini syndicate, flanked by two high-priced corporate defense attorneys and his daughter, Vanessa.
Vanessa was wearing large designer sunglasses to hide her puffy, crying eyes, wrapped in a fresh ivory mink coat that reeked of entitlement.
“Where is he?” Antonio Bellini bellowed, his voice echoing off the high decorative molding.
“Where is Luca Moretti? How dare he throw my daughter out onto the street like a common streetwalker over domestic staff gossip!”
I stood at the top of the grand marble staircase, watching the scene unfold from the shadow of the balustrade.
Luca stepped out from his private first-floor library, completely unfazed, holding a steaming porcelain cup of black coffee.
He hadn't slept a single second, yet his posture was as rigid and lethal as a drawn broadsword.
“You are making a tremendous amount of noise in a house where my mother is resting, Antonio,” Luca said quietly, taking a slow sip.
Vanessa pushed past her father, pointing an accusatory finger upward toward where I stood.
“There she is! Daddy, that’s the maid who orchestrated the entire scene!”
“She stole an antique bowl from the kitchen, cooked low-grade garbage, and lied to Luca that I turned his mother away!”
“She’s trying to break our engagement so she can seduce Luca for his money! Look at her standing up there like she owns the place!”
Antonio took a threatening step toward the stairs, his face mottled red with aristocratic fury.
“Luca, you will fire that lying peasant immediately, and you will sign the joint harbor development contracts before noon!”
“The Bellini family will not be disgraced in front of high society because of your psychotic family sentimentality!”
Luca set his coffee cup down on a nearby mahogany pedestal table with deliberate slowness.
He didn't look at Antonio; his gaze remained locked on Vanessa’s sunglasses.
“Take off the glasses, Vanessa,” Luca ordered calmly.
Vanessa stiffened, looking at her father for protection.
“Take them off before I have Marco rip them off your face,” Luca added, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper.
Trembling, Vanessa slowly pulled off the dark designer shades, revealing red, swollen eyes that darted anxiously across the room.
Luca reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a stack of photocopied bank statements and wire receipts.
He tossed the sheaf of papers directly onto the polished floor at Antonio Bellini’s feet.
The white sheets scattered across the gray marble like dry leaves.
“Explain transaction four-eight-nine-two, Antonio,” Luca said coldly.
Antonio frowned, signaling his head attorney to pick up the documents.
The lawyer adjusted his gold-rimmed spectacles, skimmed the first two pages, and immediately blanched, his hands beginning to shake.
“Mr. Bellini... these are the private ledger transfers from the Moretti Medical Foundation directly into the Panama shell corporations,” the lawyer whispered in terror.
“What did you do, Vanessa?” Antonio hissed, turning his head sharply toward his daughter.
Vanessa backed away, her voice rising in a panicked screech.
“It wasn't just me! We needed the liquidity to cover the port seizures in New Orleans! Daddy, you told me to find the cash!”
“And you chose to steal it from an old woman living off cheap canned beans in a rotting cottage?” Luca roared, stepping forward with thunderous authority.
Antonio Bellini swallowed hard, realizing that the balance of power in Chicago had shifted irreversibly beneath his feet in a single night.
“Luca... this is an internal accounting discrepancy... we can settle this with commercial restitution...”
“You cannot settle the theft of a mother’s dignity with paper money, Antonio,” Luca said, his eyes burning with absolute retribution.
“By eight o'clock, the federal racketeering division will receive full unredacted copies of these accounts.”
“And by noon, the Chicago harbor authority will revoke every commercial docking permit bearing the Bellini family crest.”
Vanessa let out a strangled wail of despair, clutching her father’s arm as the reality of absolute financial ruin crushed them.
“You’re destroying our entire family over a bowl of chicken soup?” she shrieked hysterically.
May you like
Luca looked her dead in the eye with utter contempt.
“No, Vanessa. I am destroying you because you thought love and loyalty could be trampled beneath a red designer dress.”
