Chapter 9 - The Shadow of Retaliation

Within two hours, the Bellini family had been forcibly escorted off the Gold Coast grounds by armed private security.

The grand foyer was once again silent, but the air felt heavy with the lingering electricity of an impending gangland war.

A family as proud and desperate as the Bellinis would not slide into bankruptcy without firing a desperate parting shot.

Marco approached Luca near the grand arched entrance, holding a secure satellite phone.

“Boss, Antonio’s cousins in the South Side syndicate just pulled twelve armored sedans out of their motor pool.”

“They know the federal warrants are dropping by afternoon. They’re cornered animals, Luca.”

“If they can't save their empire, they’re going to try to take leverage before they flee the state.”

Luca listened with cold detachment, his fingers adjusting the gold cufflinks at his wrists.

“Increase perimeter security to Level Four. Place four armed details on the upper floor outside my mother’s bedroom.”

Then Luca’s gaze shifted across the foyer, landing directly on me as I stood holding a tray of clean crystal carafes.

“Emma,” he said, gesturing for me to approach.

I set the tray down and stepped forward, keeping my posture straight despite the knots twisting in my stomach.

“Yes, Mr. Moretti?”

“You have an elderly father living on 47th Street, don't you?” he asked, his voice softening with unexpected concern.

My heart leaped into my throat, cold terror suddenly gripping my chest.

“How... how do you know where my father lives, sir?”

“I know the background of every single person who steps foot under my roof,” Luca answered simply.

“You took this housekeeping position because your father has stage-four emphysema and the medical bills were drowning your family.”

He turned toward Marco with razor-sharp decisiveness.

“Marco, take two unmarked Suburbans and four men from the inner circle.”

“Drive to 47th Street immediately, secure Emma’s father, pack his essential medical equipment, and bring him directly to the estate under heavy escort.”

I gasped, tears of shock springing to my eyes.

“Mr. Moretti, please! My father is a simple retired mechanic! He has nothing to do with any of this!”

“I know he doesn't, Emma,” Luca said, stepping closer and speaking with intense sincerity.

“Which is precisely why Antonio Bellini will look for him the moment he realizes he cannot touch me.”

“Vanessa heard me defend you this morning. She knows you were the one who exposed her crimes.”

“In their world, if they cannot hurt the king, they butcher the innocent people who spoke the truth.”

The sheer weight of the world I had stepped into crashed down upon my shoulders.

I had thought I was simply performing a small act of decency by delivering a mother’s soup to her estranged son.

Instead, I had detonated a geopolitical bomb in the city’s criminal hierarchy, painting an enormous target on my frail father’s back.

“Will he be safe here, sir?” I asked, my voice trembling with raw vulnerability.

Luca reached out, his large, scarred hand gently closing over my trembling shoulder with reassuring strength.

“As long as breath remains in my body, no harm will come to you or your father under this roof, Emma.”

“You protected my mother when everyone else was too cowardly to stand up to cruelty.”

“Now it is my turn to protect yours.”

Before I could answer, a frantic scream pierced the quiet halls from the top of the grand marble staircase.

It was Mrs. Moretti’s voice, raw with terror.

“Luca! Luca, run! They’re inside the courtyard!”

A deafening explosion blew through the southern glass conservatory, raining thousands of razor-sharp shards across the marble floor.
