Chapter 6 - The Shattered Illusion

The shock on Daniel’s face was so absolute, so profoundly comical, that I almost laughed out loud right there in the middle of the county recorder's office.

"This is a mistake! You can't arrest us! We have a signed, notarized document!" Daniel shrieked, flailing his arms as Detective Miller roughly grabbed his wrists and forced them behind his back, snapping the cold steel handcuffs into place with a sharp, metallic click.

"Your notary friend Marcus Vance is currently being arrested across town at his office, Mr. Lawson," Miller informed him coldly, patting Daniel down for weapons. "And his master logbook shows no record of your wife ever appearing before him to sign that document. That’s called a slam-dunk felony forgery charge."

Patricia tried to pull away from the second detective, clutching her designer handbag to her chest like a shield.

"Unhand me this instant! Do you know who my family is?! We are pillars of this community! This is harassment! Where is your supervisor?!" she screeched, her face turning a mottled, furious shade of purple.

"Your supervisor is currently reviewing a federal wire fraud and coercion file, ma'am," the detective replied deadpan, guiding her arms backward with practiced efficiency. "Save your speeches for the arraignment judge."

As the pair of handcuffed criminals were marched toward the double glass doors in total public humiliation—with bystanders whispering, pointing, and recording the spectacle on their smartphones—I stepped out from behind the marble pillar, pulling my hood back.

Daniel stopped dead in his tracks as he caught sight of me standing by the pillar, watching them with cool, unbothered detachment.

His eyes bulged in pure, unadulterated horror.

"You..." Daniel choked out, his voice cracking with a mixture of betrayal and sheer terror. "You set us up. You were behind this the whole time."

I walked slowly toward him, stopping just two feet away so I could look down into his terrified, pathetic face.

"You tried to starve, freeze, and legally evict my pregnant daughter over a house you didn't pay a single dime for, Daniel," I said softly, letting every word drip with lethal precision. "Did you really think I was just going to sit back and let you steal her life?"

"Claire is my wife! She has to forgive me! She loves me!" he cried out, thrashing weakly against the detective's grip.

"Emily hasn't loved you in months, Daniel," I replied smoothly. "And as of this morning, her divorce attorney filed a restraining order that bars you from coming within five hundred miles of her, let alone her property."

Patricia glared at me with pure, unadulterated venom as she was dragged past me toward the exit. "You ruined us, you bitter old witch! We'll take everything you have in civil court!"

"You can try," I smiled, patting my coat pocket where my phone sat securely. "Right after you finish serving your mandatory prison sentences."

The doors swung shut behind them, cutting off their hysterical shouting as the room slowly returned to its normal, bureaucratic hum.

Chief Investigator Miller walked over to me, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead with a handkerchief and offering a satisfied grin.

"Well, Rebecca. That went off smoother than a well-tuned stenograph machine."

"Thank you, Miller," I said, shaking his hand firmly. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a daughter to take out for a very celebratory dinner."
