Chapter 1 - The Wedding Night Ultimatum

The scent of white roses and expensive champagne still lingered in the air, but the reality of the Ortega household hit harder than a physical blow.
I stood in the center of the master bedroom, the heavy silk and lace of my designer wedding dress feeling less like a celebration garment and more like a restrictive armor.
The door swung open without a warning knock, shattering the quiet illusion of newlywed bliss.
Beatriz Ortega strode in, her face locked in a permanent sneer of superiority, dragging a faded blue plastic bucket across the polished wooden floor.
A noxious, stale odor emanated from the container immediately.
Gray, soapy water sloshed over the rim, mixing with a repulsive collection of garments that churned my stomach.
There sat Mauricio’s dirty underwear.
His father’s.
His brother’s.
An entire family’s worth of unwashed, sweat-stained undergarments dumped in a single receptacle of domestic servitude.
“Wash it by hand,” Beatriz commanded, her voice sharp as broken glass. “And tomorrow you get up before dawn to make breakfast for the entire household. The men need fuel before work, and lazy wives have no place under this roof.”
For a terrifying second, my mind refused to process her words.
I assumed it was a bizarre, twisted joke born from some generational tradition I hadn't been briefed on.
“Beatriz, I married Mauricio today,” I replied, my voice remarkably steady despite the absurdity of the situation. “I wasn’t hired as the live-in family maid.”
Her face hardened into an ugly mask of pure contempt.
For two full years, the Ortega family had known me exclusively as Valeria Cruz.
They believed I was an orphaned administrative assistant who scraped by in a modest, rented apartment downtown, living paycheck to paycheck.
They saw me as a quiet, compliant girl with zero family backing, zero financial cushion, and zero social status to protect her.
What they did not know—what Mauricio’s entire gold-digging family remained utterly oblivious to—was that I actually chaired Horizonte Capital, a multi-billion-peso private investment fund managing massive international portfolios.
I had intentionally concealed my vast wealth, corporate power, and elite social standing for one absolute reason.
I wanted to find out if someone could love me for my soul, my mind, and my character without seeing a multi-million-peso balance sheet first.
Mauricio had passed every preliminary test with flying colors.
He had played the role of the devoted, attentive, financially independent partner to absolute perfection.
Or so I had foolishly believed until the reception ended and the masks dropped.
Footsteps echoed down the hallway as Mauricio entered the room, drawn by the sound of his mother’s raised voice and escalating demands.
“Tell your wife to stop acting like a spoiled princess,” Beatriz snapped, pointing a manicured finger in my direction. “She refuses to help the family, and she’s already showing her true, ungrateful colors.”
Mauricio looked down at the vile blue bucket.
Then he looked at me, his expression shifting from a casual smile to a cold, entitled detachment.
“Vale, just do what my mom says,” Mauricio said, waving a dismissive hand. “Don’t start unnecessary problems on our very first night together. It’s not that hard.”
I stared at the man I had exchanged vows with hours earlier, watching the illusion disintegrate piece by piece.
“You actually want me to wash your father’s and your brother’s dirty underwear?”
“My mom did it her whole life for the men in this house,” Mauricio answered defensively, as if it were the most natural law of the universe. “Now it’s your turn to earn your keep.”
“If it’s such an honored tradition, you wash it.”
The audacity of my refusal caused Beatriz to erupt into a furious tirade.
“Did you hear how she spoke to your father and you? Put her in her place right now!”
Mauricio had been drinking heavily throughout the wedding reception, a fact I had minimized until that exact second.
I could see the dangerous haze of alcohol and bruised male ego clouding his eyes before he even crossed the bedroom floor.
He lunged forward, grabbing my bare arm with a rough, bruising grip strong enough to throw me completely off balance.
“Don’t you ever disrespect my mother again in this house,” he hissed through clenched teeth.
“Let go of me immediately.”
He refused to release my arm.
Instead, his open palm struck my face with a sharp, stinging crack.
Pain flashed hot and blinding across my cheek, and I immediately tasted the metallic tang of blood where my lip split against my teeth.
Standing right behind him, wearing a look of absolute sadistic triumph, Beatriz nodded approvingly.
“That’s right. That’s how you teach a proud, rebellious woman how to behave.”
I didn’t cry.
I didn’t scream or throw a hysterical fit.
I looked directly into the eyes of the man I had legally married only hours earlier, and I understood our entire dynamic with a terrifying, crystal-clear lucidity.
The attentive, loving, progressive Mauricio I thought I knew had only ever existed as long as I remained convenient, submissive, and financially dependent.
Then, moving with slow, deliberate precision, I bent down toward the blue bucket.
A smug smile spread across Beatriz’s face.
She genuinely believed I was breaking, surrendering, and accepting my subjugation as the lowest-ranking servant in their patriarchal cage.
Instead, I wrapped both hands firmly around the heavy blue plastic rim, hoisted the sloshing container upward, and dumped the entire contents of gray, dirty water and filthy laundry directly over Mauricio’s head.
He stood there completely soaked, foul-smelling underwear clinging pathetically to his expensive wedding suit.
“This is the absolute last time you or anyone else in this pathetic family will ever put your hands on me,” I declared, my voice ice-cold.
I turned around, grabbed my pre-packed suitcase and my secure work computer from the chair.
Mauricio sputtered, wiping dirty water from his eyes, and lunged after me toward the doorway.
“Go ahead and walk out!” he yelled, his voice cracking with rage and humiliation. “Let’s see how long you last out in the real world without me! You’ll be back crawling and begging on your knees in a week!”
I didn’t bother turning around to dignify his pathetic delusion with a response.
Outside the gated estate, the cool night air hit my bruised face like a refreshing shock.
I tapped my phone screen, quietly requesting a high-end private transport service.
Mauricio appeared at the front door, shouting insults into the dark.
“With what lawyer are you going to sue me? You can’t even afford a decent apartment on your pathetic salary!” he mocked, laughing hysterically.
I kept my mouth shut, refusing to waste my breath on a fool.

A sleek, black executive vehicle glided silently to the curb, the driver immediately stepping out to open the rear door for me.
I placed my encrypted laptop safely beside the seat, climbed inside with my suitcase, and watched the Ortega estate fade into the rearview mirror forever.
