Chapter 8 - THE INTRUDER IN THE MANOR

The amber glow of the terminal screen flickered as the power draw in the bunker dipped slightly, signaling that a secondary circuit somewhere in the mansion above had just been triggered.

“How did they find us?” Julian hissed, his voice trembling as he instinctively reached down toward the sleeping infant wrapped in the blanket on the leather sofa.

“They didn't track us here,” Arthur said, his mind racing through tactical possibilities with terrifying speed. “The pickup truck we left in the treeline. The engine block was still warm when we cut the ignition. A thermal drone scanning the ridge would have picked up the heat signature within twenty minutes.”

Footsteps echoed softly from the stone staircase leading down from the main floor of the manor—heavy, measured, and deliberate. Someone was descending into the cellar.

“Get behind the desk,” Arthur ordered in a fierce whisper, pushing Julian and the baby toward the heavy oak shelving unit in the corner.

Julian scooped Rose into his arms, pulling Maya and waking Toby with a gentle, frantic motion, shoving them into the narrow alcove behind the filing cabinets.

Arthur pulled a heavy steel wrench from the tool chest beside the generator, stepping smoothly into the shadows near the base of the staircase. His legs felt strong, steady, and completely responsive beneath him—ready for whatever was coming down those steps.

The cellar door creaked open, the rusted hinges groaning in the damp air. A single beam of a high-intensity tactical flashlight cut through the darkness, sweeping across the stone floor, the wood stove, and the sleeping bags before swinging directly toward the desk.

“Clear,” a cold, mechanical voice called out from the top of the stairs.

A man in a sleek tactical vest stepped down into the room, holding a suppressed automatic rifle at the ready. It wasn't one of the corporate thugs from the alley; this was a professional operative—clean-cut, expressionless, and wearing an earpiece that blinked with a blue LED light.

Arthur didn't wait for the operative to sweep the corner. With a sudden, explosive surge of energy, he lunged forward from the shadows, swinging the heavy steel wrench in a wide arc.

The wrench struck the operative’s shoulder with a sickening thud, sending the tactical flashlight clattering across the stone floor and knocking the man off balance.

“What the—” the operative choked out, trying to raise his rifle barrel.

Arthur slammed his shoulder directly into the man’s chest, driving him backward against the stone wall with enough force to knock the wind completely out of his lungs. The rifle slipped from the operative's fingers, clattering onto the concrete floor.

Before the man could recover, Arthur pinned him against the wall with his forearm pressed hard against the operative's throat.

“Who sent you?” Arthur demanded, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. “Thorne?”

The operative didn't answer with words. Instead, a grim, humorless smile touched the corners of his mouth as he tapped the side of his earpiece.

“Package confirmed at the north ridge estate,” the operative spoke clearly into his comms unit before Arthur could stop him. “Initiating extraction protocol alpha.”

Arthur’s blood ran cold. The operative hadn't come here alone; he was just the advance scout.
