Chapter 10 - The New Empire

One year later, the fortress on the hill was no longer called a mausoleum.

They called it home.

The iron gates were still secure, and the security cameras still monitored the perimeter, but the armed guards at the entrance now wore smiles instead of scowls.

Inside, the east wing had been completely renovated into a luxurious, state-of-the-art medical suite where Linda Harper—Emma’s mother—lived comfortably, surrounded by cheerful nurses, sunlight, and fresh flowers delivered every morning by order of the head of the house.

Downstairs in the grand kitchen, the smell of fresh coffee and baking bread filled the air every morning at six o'clock.

Dominic Kane still ruled Harbor City’s shipping lanes with an iron fist, but his business was clean now—legitimate, transparent, and untouchable by federal prosecutors or rival syndicates.

And every evening, when the sun dipped below the Connecticut tree line and painted the bullet-resistant windows in shades of gold and amber, the grand double doors of the study would open.

Emma would walk in, carrying two cups of coffee, and pull up a chair right beside his desk.

Dominic would look up from his ledgers, his dark eyes softening, and roll his chair closer to hers.

The world still thought the old mafia boss was gone.

Let them think it.

The man who sat in that chair now didn't need legs to rule his world, because the woman standing beside him had taught him how to walk again without ever taking a single step.
