Chapter 9 - The Return to the Fortress

The rain was still hammering against the bullet-resistant glass when the black SUV rolled through the iron gates of the Kane estate.

Inside the fortress, the medical staff had been cleared out.

Only Ethan and Mrs. Caldwell remained in the hallway outside the second-floor study.

Emma sat in an armchair by the fireplace, wrapped in a heavy wool blanket, sipping hot tea laced with honey. Her left arm was bruised, but she was entirely, miraculously safe.

Dominic sat across from her in his wheelchair, staring into the flickering flames of the fireplace.

For a long time, neither of them spoke.

The silence wasn't heavy anymore. It felt warm, settled, and permanent.

“You’re an idiot, Dominic Kane,” Emma finally said, her voice small but steady.

Dominic didn't look away from the fire. “Is that what we’re calling our employers now?”

“You risked your entire empire over a maid who fell asleep on your sofa,” she said, her eyes softening as she looked at him.

Dominic slowly turned his head.

The harsh, cold, paranoid monster everyone in Harbor City feared was entirely gone.

In his place was a man who had finally remembered how to live.

“You weren't just a maid, Emma,” Dominic said softly, his voice dropping into a tone she had never heard before. “You were the only person in two years who didn't look at me like I was broken.”

He reached out, resting his heavy, scarred hand on the arm of his chair.

Emma didn't hesitate.

She stood up from the armchair, walked over, and knelt down right beside his wheelchair.

She placed her small, calloused hand over his scarred knuckles.

Dominic’s fingers twitched beneath hers.

He couldn't feel the warmth of her skin through his nerves, but he could feel the pressure—real, solid, and undeniable.

He smiled.

A full, genuine, uncompromised smile that reached all the way to his eyes.
