Chapter 5 - The Unraveling of the Queen

"Daria Kincaid," the lead federal investigator announced, his voice booming effortlessly through the suddenly dead-silent ballroom acoustics as he strode past the frozen crowd straight toward the dais. "You are under federal arrest for conspiracy to commit kidnapping, wire fraud, falsification of government and medical records, and attempted murder."

Chaos erupted across the room. Shouts of shock, frantic whispering, and camera flashes from hidden social media bloggers immediately transformed the glittering corporate gala into a circus of scandal.

Daria stumbled backward against the edge of the dais, her manicured fingers gripping the velvet fabric for balance. Her eyes darted wildly from the federal marshals to Catherine, and finally locked onto me with a look of pure, venomous betrayal.

"Samuel..." Daria breathed out, her voice cracking for the first time in her life. "You... you knew? You brought this... this impostor here to destroy your own family?"

I stepped down the final two steps, walking past the frozen crowd until I stood directly shoulder-to-shoulder with the investigator, looking down at the woman who had given birth to me yet treated me as nothing more than a pawn on her personal chessboard.

"She isn't an impostor, Mother," I said, my voice cutting cleanly through the rising din of the room. "She is my wife. And little Penelope is your granddaughter. The only impostor in this room is the monster who stole two years of our lives to protect her stock portfolio."

"You arrogant little fool!" Daria suddenly shrieked, her mask of cool aristocratic dignity shattering completely as panic gave way to rabid desperation. She pointed a trembling finger at Catherine. "That bitch was going to ruin everything! She was poisoning your mind, turning you soft, threatening to strip the Kincaid legacy away from our family! I did what had to be done to protect this company!"

The entire ballroom collectively sucked in its breath. The confession echoed clearly off the high vaulted ceilings, captured live on a dozen hidden smartphones and security microphones.

"Thank you for the confession, Daria," the federal investigator said calmly, stepping forward and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists with a sharp, metallic click. "That will save the court a great deal of time."

Two marshals firmly gripped Daria by her arms, hauling her away from the dais as she thrashed and screamed obscenities, her expensive velvet gown dragging across the spilled champagne on the floor. As they dragged her past the rows of stunned board members—men and women who had blindly trusted her for decades—not a single person stood up to help her. Her empire of fear and manipulation had collapsed in less than five minutes.

I watched silently as the heavy mahogany doors closed behind my mother, cutting off her furious screams. The storm had finally broken, leaving behind a profound, cleansing stillness.
