Chapter 6 - Rebuilding the Ashes

The weeks following the gala passed in a whirlwind of legal depositions, asset audits, and emergency board meetings. With Daria Kincaid locked away in a federal holding facility awaiting trial without bail, and Dr. Weston turning state's evidence in exchange for a reduced sentence, the true ownership of Kincaid Enterprises reverted legally and morally to its rightful heirs.

The board of directors, thoroughly shaken by the scandal and terrified of federal scrutiny, unanimously voted me in as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, while Catherine was reinstated as Senior Vice President of Strategic Operations—a position she had earned long before my mother's conspiracy tried to erase her from existence.

It was a crisp Saturday morning, exactly one month after Catherine walked out of the rain and into my hotel lobby. We were sitting on the expansive balcony of our penthouse suite, watching the golden autumn sunlight wash over the glittering skyscrapers of the financial district below.

Catherine was curled up in a cushioned lounge chair, a steaming mug of herbal tea resting between her hands, while little Penelope—now walking unsteadily on her chubby legs—chased a plush toy across the outdoor rug with happy, bubbling giggles.

I walked out from the study carrying two freshly brewed coffees, a soft smile resting on my face. I handed a mug to Catherine and sat down on the edge of her chair, wrapping my arm around her shoulders and pulling her close against my side.

"Penny is learning new words every day," Catherine murmured, her eyes shining with happiness as she watched our daughter chase the toy. "She said dada twice this morning before she said mama."

"Good," I chuckled, pressing a tender kiss into her soft chestnut hair. "She clearly has excellent taste."

Catherine leaned her head against my chest, letting out a long, contented sigh that felt like the final release of two years of suppressed nightmares.

"Do you ever think about her?" Catherine asked quietly, her voice carrying a trace of lingering sadness. "Daria, I mean."

I looked out over the sprawling city skyline, watching the ant-like traffic move far below us.

"I feel pity, more than anything," I admitted honestly. "She spent her entire life accumulating power, building walls, and destroying everyone who didn't fit into her rigid calculations. In the end, she died alone in a prison cell of her own making, while we are here, rebuilding our family out of the ashes she tried to create."

"We won, Samuel," Catherine whispered, turning her face to press a warm kiss against my palm. "We actually won."

"We didn't just win, my love," I replied, tightening my grip around her and watching our daughter stumble into our arms with joyful shrieks. "We survived. And nothing in this world will ever tear us apart again."
