Chapter 14 - The Reckoning of Peter Lawson

The standoff inside Hangar Seven dissolved into sudden, desperate chaos.

Deputy Director Vance realized that the state troopers and the Inspector General’s units were not an extraction force.

They were his executioners.

"Cover me!" Vance screamed to his remaining private contractors, abandoning all composure as he bolted toward the rear gantry stairs.

The contractors, realizing their employer was abandoning them to face treason charges, threw their weapons onto the concrete floor and dropped to their knees with their hands behind their heads.

"State police, advance!" the megaphone roared from the entrance.

Troopers in tactical gear poured through the blasted doors, securing the surrendering mercenaries with zip-ties and clearing the ground floor with mechanical precision.

Emma didn't wait for the troopers to clear the mezzanine.

"Noah, stay with Adrian!" Emma commanded.

"Emma, wait!" Adrian yelled, reaching for her arm, but she was already moving with the speed of an incoming missile.

She vaulted over the tool chest and charged up the metal stairs toward the second-floor observation room.

She knew where Vance was going.

He was going for Peter Lawson, and he was going for the ledge that led to the airfield's southern drainage perimeter.

Emma kicked open the ruined office door, her sidearm raised to her eye line.

Inside the smoke-filled room, Peter Lawson had managed to use a shard of broken window glass to saw through the zip-tie binding his right wrist.

He was standing on trembling legs, holding a backup snub-nosed revolver he had pulled from an ankle holster, his bloody face contorted in frantic madness.

Vance had just burst through the opposite door, lunging for Lawson’s lapels.

"Where are the duplicate flash drives, Peter?!" Vance screamed, shaking the injured supervisor with frantic rage.

"Where did you put the cryptographic keys?!"

Lawson looked at Vance, his eyes wild, blood running freely down his neck.

"They're gone, Harold!" Lawson wheezed, spitting blood into Vance’s face.

"The Carter girl has the ledgers! The whole thing is over!"

"You idiot!" Vance roared, drawing a concealed automatic from his overcoat and pressing it beneath Lawson’s chin.

"You brought this ruin down on us because you couldn't handle a twenty-seven-year-old girl!"

"Drop the weapon, Vance!" Emma’s voice hit the room like a crack of thunder.

Both men froze.

Emma stood in the shattered doorway, her tactical silhouette framed by the flashing blue strobe lights from the tarmac below.

Her weapon was aimed dead-center between Vance’s cold, arrogant eyes.

Vance slowly turned his head, his gun still pressed against Lawson’s throat.

"You won't shoot, Carter," Vance said, his voice regaining a desperate, brittle edge of condescension.

"You're an FBI agent. You follow protocol. You read rights."

"If you pull that trigger, you spend forty years in Leavenworth."

Emma did not lower her weapon by a fraction of a millimeter.

"My father followed protocol, Vance," Emma said, her voice dropping into a chilling, absolute stillness.

"He trusted the bureau."

"He trusted the marshals."

"He trusted men who swore an oath on the Constitution while stuffing their pockets with blood money."

"And you put him in a burning car on Route Nine."

Lawson, seeing Vance’s attention waver toward Emma, made his final, fatal calculation.

He swung his snub-nosed revolver upward, trying to shoot Vance through the ribs to save his own skin.

Vance felt the motion, pulled his own trigger, and fired a heavy hollow-point round straight through Lawson’s neck.

Lawson’s eyes rolled back into his head, a sickening gurgle escaping his lips as he collapsed backward through the shattered observation window, falling forty feet onto the concrete tarmac below.

As Lawson fell, Vance spun his weapon toward Emma.

He never completed the motion.

Emma squeezed the trigger twice.

Double tap.

Center mass.

The heavy nine-millimeter rounds punched through Vance’s tailored wool coat, shattering his breastbone and severing his thoracic aorta.

Vance’s gun dropped from limp fingers.

His eyes widened in sudden, absolute shock, staring at Emma as if unable to comprehend that the machine he had commanded for thirty years had failed to protect him.

He took one staggering step backward, his back hitting the wall, and slid down the blood-streaked drywall into a lifeless heap.

Silence settled over the observation room, broken only by the whistling wind and the rhythmic ticking of the radiator pipe.

Emma lowered her weapon, her chest heaving, the acrid scent of cordite burning her nostrils.

She looked down at Harold Vance’s lifeless body, then turned toward the broken window.

Below on the tarmac, Peter Lawson lay unmoving beside the wreckage of the Gulfstream jet, surrounded by state police flashlights.

The eleven-year nightmare was over.

The architect of her father’s murder and the man who had stolen her brother were dead.

From the bottom of the metal stairs, the sound of small, hurried footfalls echoed against the iron steps.

Noah appeared in the doorway, breathless, followed closely by Adrian Russo, whose rifle was lowered at his side.

Noah stopped at the threshold, looking at the broken glass, the blood, and finally at Emma standing tall in the center of the ruined room.

Emma dropped her weapon into its holster, fell to her knees on the shattered glass, and opened her arms.

"Noah," she choked out, her voice finally breaking under the weight of two years of unspeakable grief.

The boy ran across the room and threw himself into her chest, burying his face into her neck, sobbing with all the heartbreak and relief a child could hold.

Emma wrapped her arms around him, pulling him against her body, rocking him gently as tears streamed down her face, washing away the blood, the soot, and the lies.

Adrian stood in the doorway, his broad frame leaning against the iron frame, watching the brother and sister with a quiet, solemn respect that no court of law would ever understand.
