Chapter 9 - The Betrayal Within the Bloodline

Matteo stood in the open doorway of the vault, his dark eyes shifting rapidly between Luca Ferraro and the piece of paper trembling in Elena's hand.

“Put the gun down, Luca,” Matteo commanded quietly, his voice entirely devoid of its usual authority, carrying instead the heavy, dragging weight of deep exhaustion.

Luca slowly lowered his pistol, though he didn't holster it, keeping his body positioned between Matteo and Elena.

“Is it true?” Elena asked, her voice cracking as tears spilled over her lower lashes and tracked hot paths through the flour dust on her cheeks. “Did you know who I was the entire time?”

Matteo didn't look away.

He walked slowly into the underground study, ignoring Antonio's muffled laughter echoing down through the ventilation shaft above.

“Yes,” Matteo admitted, his voice rough and quiet. “I knew who you were the moment you applied for the prep cook position two months ago.”

Elena felt as though she had been punched squarely in the chest.

“You lied to me,” she sobbed, stepping backward until her spine hit the edge of the mahogany desk. “You watched me work double shifts, you watched me struggle to pay rent, and all the while you were just treating me like a piece of chess equipment in your war against your brother!”

“It wasn't a game, Elena,” Matteo said, taking a slow step toward her with his palms open and empty. “When Antonio's men started closing in on your apartment in Cicero three months ago, you weren't safe anywhere in the city. Bringing you inside Bellavita under my direct protection was the only way I could keep you alive long enough to figure out who was trying to finish what they started twenty-five years ago.”

“And using me as bait to draw Antonio out?” she shouted, her voice breaking with raw agony. “Was that part of your grand protection plan too?”

Matteo didn't answer immediately.

He looked up toward the ceiling vent where Antonio's laughter was slowly fading away down the metal shaft.

“Antonio didn't win this round,” Matteo said coldly, his jaw tightening. “And he's not getting his hands on that cipher.”

“You both want the sixty million dollars,” Elena spat out bitterly, holding the notebook tightly against her chest like a shield. “You're no different from him. You're just two vultures fighting over my mother's grave!”

“Listen to me, Elena,” Matteo stepped closer, his dark eyes burning with fierce intensity. “Your mother didn't steal that money out of greed. Don Salvatore set up that trust specifically to protect Isabella from Antonio after our father died. Antonio killed our father to seize control of the syndicate, and he would have killed Isabella and you as loose ends if she hadn't disappeared into the suburbs.”

Elena stared at him, her mind frantically trying to separate the lies from the terrifying truth.

“How do I know you're not lying to me just like he did?” she demanded.

Matteo reached slowly into the inside pocket of his blood-stained suit jacket.

He pulled out a thick, yellowed manila envelope tied with faded red string and held it out toward her.

“Read it,” Matteo said softly. “It's our father's original, signed last will and testament, written the night before he died.”

Elena hesitated, her hands shaking so violently she could barely hold her mother's notebook.

Luca stepped forward cautiously, gently taking the envelope from Matteo's hand and laying it flat on the mahogany desk in front of her.

Elena untied the faded red string with trembling fingers.

She pulled out a thick stack of heavy parchment paper covered in shaky, elegant cursive handwriting.

She scanned the lines under the green-shaded desk lamp.

“To whoever reads this after my passing, know that my son Antonio is consumed by a sickness of power that will destroy everything I built. I leave my entire hidden reserve fund in the care of Isabella Rossi, the only person in this family with the courage and soul to use it for redemption rather than ruin. If Antonio finds her, God help us all.”

The signature at the bottom was signed in bold, shaking ink: Don Salvatore De Luca.

Elena stared at the signature until the letters blurred behind a fresh wave of blinding tears.

“He trusted her,” Elena whispered, the realization washing over her like cold water.

“He trusted her with his life and his legacy,” Matteo confirmed quietly, standing just feet away from her. “And she protected that secret until her dying breath, passing the burden down to you without ever telling you the crushing weight of what you were carrying.”

Suddenly, a loud, metallic explosion echoed through the stone ceiling above them, shaking dust and loose mortar down from the vault roof.

A second later, the emergency backup lights in the underground study flickered violently twice and died completely, plunging the room into pitch blackness.

“They've blown the rear delivery entrance,” Luca roared, raising his pistol toward the open doorway as the sound of heavy combat echoed down the stone steps.
