Chapter 13 - The Return toeta's Vault of Shadows

The ruins of Bellavita looked like a bombed-out war zone when Elena and Luca slipped back through the shattered glass of the rear delivery entrance.

The elegant dining room was utterly deserted, its expensive mahogany tables overturned and crystal chandeliers smashed into sparkling dust across the Italian tile floor.

Not a single police siren wailed in the immediate distance, proving just how thoroughly the Chicago police department was bought and paid for by the De Luca syndicate.

Luca moved like a ghost through the shadows of the prep kitchen, his weapon raised and ready for any sudden ambush.

“The main elevator is disabled,” Luca whispered, gesturing toward the back employee stairs. “We take the service steps down to the basement vault.”

Every single muscle in Elena's body screamed in protest as they descended back into the damp, subterranean stone corridors.

The air down below grew heavier, thick with the lingering stench of cordite, gunpowder, and spilled blood.

As they reached the heavy iron doorway of Don Salvatore's underground study, they saw the horrifying aftermath of the battle.

Two of Antonio's mercenaries lay motionless across the stone threshold, their tactical vests soaked in dark pools of blood.

Inside the private vault, the scene was even grimmer.

Matteo De Luca was tied securely to the high-backed mahogany chair behind the central desk, his face bruised and bleeding from a brutal pistol-whipping.

Standing directly over him with a smug, triumphant grin was his younger brother, Antonio, holding a heavy-caliber revolver inches from Matteo's temple.

“I have to hand it to you, big brother,” Antonio chuckled darkly, pacing slowly around the chair like a predator circling a wounded animal. “You always were stubborn to a fault. But stubbornness doesn't stop a bullet through the skull.”

Matteo spat a mouthful of blood onto the Persian rug, his dark eyes burning with defiant hatred.

“You'll never open that vault, Antonio,” Matteo rasped, his voice rough and battered. “The cipher requires the exact mathematical sequence hidden in the recipe.”

“And where is your precious little niece with her mother's notebook?” Antonio mocked, raising his weapon slightly. “Oh, that's right—she drowned in the drainage tunnels like a rat.”

“She's right behind you, Antonio,” a cold, steady voice rang out from the doorway.

Antonio whipped around instantly, his eyes widening in sheer shock as he saw Elena standing in the stone archway with Luca's Beretta locked firmly in her two-handed grip, the barrel pointed directly between his eyes.

Luca stood slightly behind her, covering the dark corridor to ensure no backup could sneak up from behind.

“Well, well,” Antonio recovered quickly, a twisted smile spreading across his face as he lowered his gun from Matteo's head and turned his full attention to his niece. “The little waitress decided to come back from the dead to join the family reunion.”

“Let him go, Antonio,” Elena demanded, her hands steady despite the adrenaline roaring in her ears.

“Or what? You'll shoot your own uncle?” Antonio laughed, taking a slow step toward her. “You don't have the stomach to pull that trigger, sweet girl. You spent your whole life cutting lemons and baking bread in the suburbs.”

“Try me,” Elena whispered, stepping two feet forward into the light of the green-shaded desk lamp.

She held up her mother's worn leather recipe notebook in her left hand, dangling it just out of his reach.

“You want the sixty million dollars?” Elena challenged, her voice echoing off the stone walls. “You want the key to your father's entire hidden empire?”

Antonio's eyes locked onto the leather notebook with undisguised greed, his breathing growing shallow and fast.

“Hand it over, Elena,” Antonio whispered, his voice trembling with manic excitement. “Give me the book, and I'll let both you and your dear uncle walk out of this basement alive.”

“Don't do it, Elena!” Matteo shouted from the chair, straining against his bonds. “It's a trap!”

Antonio casually raised his revolver and fired a warning shot into the stone ceiling, showering them all in a rain of white dust and sparks.

“Shut your mouth, Matteo!” Antonio snarled, before turning back to Elena with a honeyed smile. “The book, Elena. Right now.”
