Chapter 10 - The Reckoning at Bellhaven

The fallout from that night shook the business world to its core.
The news of Arthur Pendleton's arrest and the exposure of the international fraud ring dominated the headlines for weeks.
The smear campaign against Everett evaporated overnight, replaced by stories of his brilliant counter-strategy.
But Everett didn't care about the news.
He had returned to his estate in the Crescent Hills.
The house had been swept for bugs, the security codes changed entirely, and the staff replaced with people Marcus personally vetted.
The house felt different now.
It no longer felt like a lonely museum dedicated to his past grief.
It felt like a fortress.
It was a sunny afternoon, three weeks after the incident.
The air was warm, and the city below was clear and bright.
Everett stood by the edge of the infinity pool.
The water was still a deep, beautiful sapphire, glittering under the sunlight.
He looked down at the spot where the red dress had stood.
The memory no longer made him angry. It made him feel resolved.
He had faced the worst the world could throw at him, and he had protected what mattered most.
A splash broke the quiet of the afternoon.
Everett looked over to the shallow end of the pool.
Poppy was wearing a bright pink life vest and a pair of yellow goggles.
She was splashing her feet in the water, laughing out loud.
Beside her sat a young woman named Clara, a certified child psychologist and specialized nanny whom Marcus had found.
Clara was patient, kind, and had no interest in old money or silk dresses.
She wore a simple t-shirt and jeans, her laughter echoing Poppy's.
"Look, Daddy!" Poppy called out, pointing at the water. "I'm a fish!"
Everett’s heart swelled with a warmth he hadn't felt in years.
"You're the best fish in the sea, princess," he called back, walking over to the edge.
He sat down on the stone steps, letting the cool water wash over his bare feet.
The fear was gone from her eyes.
The silence had been replaced by the beautiful sound of her laughter.
Marcus walked out onto the patio, holding a folder.
"The final court documents came through," Marcus said, standing beside him.
"Arthur and Julianne both pled guilty to avoid the maximum sentence."
"They're going away for a very long time, Everett."
"Good," Everett said, not taking his eyes off his daughter.
"And the company?"
"The merger is complete. Stock is at an all-time high. The board wants to know when you're returning to the office full-time."
Everett smiled slightly, watching Poppy splash Clara with water.

"Tell them I'm busy," Everett said.
"Tell them I have more important meetings to attend."
