Chapter 11 - The Promise of Tomorrow

As the evening approached, the sky over the Crescent Hills turned a brilliant shade of purple and gold.

The city of Bellhaven began to light up once more, a field of stars waking up in the dark.

Clara had taken Poppy inside for dinner, leaving Everett alone by the pool.

The water had turned back into that familiar sapphire glow as the patio lights turned on automatically.

Everett walked over to the edge of the deck, looking out at the world below.

He remembered the night he had stood in the kitchen, feeling split in two by his grief.

He had thought he needed someone else to complete his family.

He had thought he was broken.

But looking out over the city now, he realized the truth.

He wasn't broken. He was a father.

And a father's love was the most powerful force he had ever known.

It had given him the strength to dive into the deep end, both literally and figuratively.

He heard the glass doors slide open behind him.

He turned to see Poppy walking out, holding a fresh plate of chocolate chip cookies.

She was wearing her favorite yellow pajamas again.

"Clara said I could share one with you," she said, walking carefully across the stone deck.

She didn't look at the deep end with fear. She didn't hesitate.

She walked straight to her father, trusting him completely.

Everett knelt down, taking a cookie from her plate.

"Thank you, princess," he said, taking a bite.

Poppy leaned against his knee, looking out at the glittering city lights.

"It's pretty tonight, Daddy," she whispered.

"Yes, it is," Everett agreed, wrapping his arm around her shoulders.

"Is the lady in the red dress ever coming back?" she asked quietly.

Everett looked at her, his voice firm and filled with absolute certainty.

"No, baby. She's never coming back."

"Nobody is ever going to hurt you again. I promise."

Poppy nodded, satisfied with the answer. She took a bite of her cookie, her eyes reflecting the city lights.

The wind blew softly through the hills, carrying the scent of pine and clean water.

The sapphire pool hummed its familiar, gentle song in the background.

But it was no longer a place of shadows or secrets.

It was just water.

And they were finally home.
