Chapter 13 - The Medical Suite: A Mother’s Heartbeat and the Gathering of the Syndicate Inner Circle

Deep inside the fortified medical suite beneath the Vale Estate, the quiet hum of life support monitors provided a steady, reassuring rhythm against the silence of the underground sanctuary.

I lay comfortably on an elevated medical bed, wearing a soft cream cashmere robe, my hand resting gently over my slightly rounded stomach where my daughter was kicking with steady, healthy vigor.

The door hissed open, and Adrian Vale walked into the room, followed closely by Ben Torres, the paramedic who had first knelt beside me in the freezing Boston rain.

Ben carried a secure digital tablet displaying my latest ultrasound metrics, his expression professional yet visibly respectful as he approached the bed.

“Good afternoon, Miss Vale,” Ben said quietly, nodding to Adrian before looking at the monitor screens. “Her heart rate is exceptionally strong. Movement patterns are completely normal, and all trauma indicators from the fall have fully dissipated.”

“Thank you, Ben,” I smiled softly, looking at the young paramedic. “You kept your head when you saw the necklace on the street.”

“My father served under Mr. Vale for twenty-two years, Miss Vale,” Ben replied with a respectful bow of his head. “Recognizing a Vale is instinctive in our community. I’m just profoundly grateful we reached you before the cold did.”

Adrian stepped forward, resting his hand on the back of Ben’s shoulder.

“You honored your father’s legacy last night, Ben,” Adrian said, his deep voice carrying genuine appreciation. “Your medical unit’s promotion and endowment fund have already been processed through our private trust.”

Ben bowed again, thanking Adrian before quietly gathering his diagnostic tools and stepping out of the medical suite, leaving my father and me alone in the sterile, secure room.

Adrian walked over to the edge of my bed, his dark eyes softening as he looked down at me.

“You’ve spent the last forty-eight hours dismantling an entire financial network, Evie,” Adrian noted, a faint hint of paternal pride touching his lips. “Arthur Sterling signed over Boston Mutual Mortgage without a single legal objection, and the Mercer family assets have been completely liquidated.”

“They thought they could throw me away like trash, Dad,” I replied, looking down at the silver sapphire star resting against my chest. “They needed to learn what happens when you awaken a name they underestimated.”

“And Travis?” Adrian asked, his voice dropping slightly. “What do you want done with him? The local federal prosecutor is waiting for your final instruction before filing the permanent indictment.”

I thought of Travis kneeling in the mud on the South Boston pier, weeping for his lost lifestyle, begging for mercy he had never once extended to me.

“Don’t send him to a white-collar federal resort,” I said quietly, looking directly into my father’s eyes. “Send him to the maximum-security facility upstate. Let him spend every single day of his sentence surrounded by the very criminals his corporate firm quietly protected for years.”

Adrian smiled—a slow, lethal, and deeply satisfied smile that mirrored my own reflection.

“Done,” Adrian said smoothly. “By Monday morning, Mr. Mercer will begin his new career as an ordinary inmate.”

He turned toward the heavy titanium doors as they hissed open once more, revealing Graham Pierce standing in the hallway with a secure encrypted phone in his hand.

“Boss, we have an incoming transmission from the European syndicate council,” Graham reported, stepping into the room. “They formally acknowledge the consolidation of the New England territory under Miss Vale’s direct lineage.”

I sat up a little higher against my pillows, resting one hand firmly over my stomach while the other hand closed around the heavy silver star hanging from my neck.

The girl who had cried in the freezing rain on Commonwealth Avenue was gone forever.

In her place stood Evangeline Vale, ready to step into her true inheritance and rule the underworld with an iron fist wrapped in silk.
