Chapter 11 - The Counter-Strike Under The Flashbulbs

The flashbulbs in the St. Jude Memorial Hospital lobby illuminated the dense pages of the original audit ledger like lightning cracking across a dark sky.

Julian Vance’s arrogant smile instantly vanished, replaced by a sudden, ugly flash of panic that twisted his sharp features into a mask of pure disbelief as he stared at the federal court seal gleaming under the overhead lights.

What is that? Some pathetic last-minute theater, a desperate stack of forged photocopies meant to stall the inevitable execution of a legally binding default judgment? Julian stammered, his voice losing its smooth, cultured cadence and rising half an octave in nervous volume.

Sergeant Miller, the lead sheriff’s deputy, stepped forward with a frown, holding out his hand to inspect the document I was holding up for the press corps to photograph.

Let me see those papers, ma’am, the sergeant instructed firmly, his hand resting on his utility belt as he scanned the official court signatures and the bold notary stamps.

I didn't hesitate for a single second; I handed the heavy parchment over directly into his gloved hands, watching as his experienced eyes tracked down the lines of Victor Vance’s handwritten embezzlement confession from twenty-six years ago.

As the sergeant read further down the page, his eyes widened in absolute shock, and his posture stiffened noticeably as he recognized the federal seal of Judge Sterling stamped across the bottom margin.

Good lord... this isn't a photocopy, Sergeant Miller muttered, looking up from the papers to fix a harsh, accusatory glare directly onto Julian Vance’s pale face.

This is an original federal court dismissal order and a notarized corporate confession proving that the four-million-dollar default judgment your firm filed against the Miller family was built entirely on fabricated ledgers and illegal evidence tampering.

The room erupted into absolute pandemonium in an instant.

Local news reporters shouted over one another, thrusting their microphones closer to Julian as the camera operators swarmed around him like a pack of wolves catching the scent of blood in the water.

Mr. Vance! Is it true your firm operated on fraudulent default judgments? Did your father frame his business partner to steal corporate assets? Is this an illegal asset seizure scheme? a reporter from the local metropolitan daily yelled aggressively.

Julian’s face turned an ugly shade of mottled crimson as he desperately tried to regain control of the narrative, swatting a camera lens away from his face with a furious shove.

It’s a lie! Those documents are stolen property, forged relics from a disgruntled former employee meant to sabotage a legitimate corporate debt recovery process! Arrest them, Sergeant! Execute the midnight foreclosure order right now! Julian shrieked, pointing a shaking finger at Gabriel and me.

Sergeant Miller slowly folded the federal documents, slid them into a clean evidence folder, and turned around to face Julian with a cold, disgusted look in his eyes.

I can't execute any foreclosure order based on fraudulent default judgments, Mr. Vance. In fact, under state and federal statutes, attempting to enforce a fraudulent debt using falsified court filings constitutes felony extortion and wire fraud, the sergeant stated loudly, his voice carrying clearly over the noisy lobby.

Before Julian could sputter another word in his own defense, two of the junior deputies stepped forward on either side of him, their hands clicking against their handcuffs as they secured his arms behind his back.

Julian Vance, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, evidence tampering, and malicious abuse of legal process. You have the right to remain silent, Sergeant Miller recited crisply, reading him his Miranda rights right there under the hospital chandeliers.

The flashing camera strobes captured every single agonizing second of Julian’s spectacular downfall as he was dragged backward out of the hospital lobby toward the waiting patrol cars, his expensive Italian suit rumpled and his face contorted in bitter rage.

As the glass doors slid shut behind the handcuffed corporate predator, a massive, collective sigh of relief echoed through the lobby, and my knees finally felt weak enough to give out under the sudden withdrawal of adrenaline.

May you like

Gabriel caught me by the waist just in time, pulling me tightly against his chest as we stood together amidst the fading hum of the news cameras and the quiet murmur of the hospital staff.

We did it, Elena. The trap is broken, Julian is going to federal prison, and our family’s legacy is finally safe, Gabriel whispered against my hair, his own voice thick with unshed tears of pure exhaustion and triumph.
