Chapter 9 - The Midnight Awakening In The ICU

The drive back to St. Jude Memorial Hospital broke every reasonable speed limit in the book, with Gabriel’s sedan hydroplaning across the rain-slicked asphalt as we raced through the deserted downtown intersections under flashing yellow traffic lights.
When we finally screeched to a halt in the ambulance bay outside the emergency entrance, we didn't even bother parking in the visitor lot; we practically threw ourselves out of the car and sprinted through the automatic sliding glass doors.
Nurses and orderlies scattered out of our way as we charged down the hallway toward the intensive care recovery unit, our breathing ragged and our clothes soaked from the torrential downpour outside.
As we reached Room 412, Dr. Harrison was standing outside the glass door talking quietly to a pair of cardiac specialists, holding a clipboard pressed tightly against his chest with a look of intense professional concentration.
Doctor! We're here! How is Gemma? Is she awake? We heard she regained consciousness, I blurted out breathlessly, grabbing the edge of the doorframe to steady my shaking legs.
She’s awake, and her pulmonary vitals are responding much better than we anticipated, but she’s under an incredible amount of stress, and her heart monitor is showing intermittent tachycardia spikes, Dr. Harrison warned, holding up a hand to pause our rush.
You can both go in, but keep your voices calm and do not let her get agitated under any circumstances, the doctor instructed, stepping aside to let us push past the sliding glass door into the sterile room.
Stepping into the ICU felt entirely different than it had hours earlier when Gemma lay completely motionless under the heavy white blankets; now, the room was charged with a fragile, vibrant energy that made my heart swell with overwhelming emotion.
Gemma’s eyes were open, blinking slowly against the harsh overhead lights as her pale lips parted in a weak, beautiful smile the moment she saw Gabriel and me walking through the doorway.
My sister looked so fragile against the crisp white pillows, hooked up to a tangle of intravenous lines and oxygen tubes, yet the familiar, radiant warmth in her eyes remained completely unchanged.
I rushed to the side of the bed, dropping to my knees and grabbing her cool, delicate fingers, pressing them against my wet cheek as hot tears spilled uncontrollably down my face.
Gemma... you're awake. You actually woke up, my sweet girl. The babies are safe, they're downstairs in the neonatal incubator unit, and they are completely healthy, I sobbed, kissing the back of her hand repeatedly.
Gemma squeezed my fingers back with a surprising surge of strength, her voice coming out as a raspy, quiet whisper that barely carried over the steady beep of the bedside heart monitor.
I... I told you... Elena... I told you Gabriel and I would take care of everything... so you wouldn't have to carry the dark ghosts alone, Gemma whispered, her chest rising and falling with a shallow, uneven rhythm.
Gabriel stepped up to the other side of the bed, gently resting his hand over her forehead and brushing a stray lock of dark hair away from her damp skin with infinite tenderness.
You played your hand brilliantly, sweetheart. We retrieved the audit ledger from the bank vault tonight, and tomorrow morning we’re going to crush Julian Vance’s entire legal syndicate once and for all, Gabriel said, his voice thick with emotion.
A wave of visible relief washed over Gemma’s exhausted features at his words, her shoulders relaxing against the mattress as she exhaled a long, shuddering breath of air.
Good... because Julian... Julian isn't waiting until tomorrow morning, Gemma gasped suddenly, her eyes widening with a sudden surge of panic that made the heart monitor beside the bed start beeping with a frantic, accelerated rhythm.
What do you mean, Gemma? What is Julian doing right now? I asked, terror gripping my chest as I watched the numbers on the digital heart rate display climb rapidly toward dangerous levels.
He didn't wait... for the foreclosure writs... he filed an emergency midnight injunction with Judge Sterling... claiming the trust assets were abandoned... and he’s sending local sheriff’s deputies to seize our family home right this minute, Gemma managed to force out before coughing weakly.
The blood drained completely from my face as the terrifying implications of her words crashed down upon us like a tidal wave, destroying our carefully laid plans to confront him in court the following morning.
Julian had bypassed the standard daytime docket entirely, exploiting a corrupt late-night magistrate to execute an illegal midnight property seizure while we were busy running errands downtown.

Before either Gabriel or I could process the cataclysmic betrayal, the heavy glass door of the ICU room swung open violently, and a burly hospital security guard stepped inside, looking completely flustered and out of breath.
Mr. Vance! Ms. Miller! You need to come down to the main lobby right now—there are four county sheriff’s deputies downstairs with an emergency court order, demanding immediate possession of your family estate, and Julian Vance is leading them in person! the guard yelled over the blaring alarms of the hospital monitors.
