Chapter 3 - THE PINGED CELL PHONE: WHERE WAS MARK VANCE WHILE HIS DAUGHTER LAY IN A HOSPITAL BED?

The hours following Diane’s arrest blurred together in a dizzying whirlwind of medical exams, forensic interviews, and police questioning.

A pediatric trauma doctor confirmed that Emma’s bruises were consistent with blunt-force trauma and restraint—specifically, being grabbed aggressively by adult hands and locked inside a confined space for an extended period.

Hearing those clinical, detached medical terms spoken aloud about my baby girl made my chest burn with a searing, intolerable agony.

By 4:30 PM, Sergeant Miller had gathered me in a quiet family consultation room down the hall from Emma’s hospital room, where Emma was finally resting peacefully under the influence of mild sedatives.

Sergeant Miller sat across a small wooden table from me, opening a leather notepad.

“Clara, we’ve tracked your husband’s cell phone,” Sergeant Miller reported, her voice carrying a cautious, measured tone.

My heart leapt into my throat. “Where is he? Is he at his corporate conference in Dallas?”

Sergeant Miller hesitated, exchanging a brief, troubled glance with Officer Hayes standing by the door.

“No, Mrs. Vance. Your husband’s phone was not pinging in Dallas.”

“Then where was it?” I demanded, leaning forward across the table. “Was he at a hotel? Was he meeting a client?”

“His phone pinged about forty-five minutes ago approximately twelve miles outside the city limits,” Sergeant Miller said quietly. “In an industrial warehouse district near the old municipal docks. And more importantly... his vehicle, a black Audi Q7, was spotted parked outside a private storage facility registered under a shell corporation linked to Meridian Tech.”

A cold spike of dread pierced my heart.

“A storage facility? Why would Mark be at a storage facility during a corporate conference?”

“That’s what we intend to find out,” Sergeant Miller said, standing up and zipping her tactical vest. “We have three units en route to the docks right now. I’m assigning a protective detail to stay here with Emma, but I need you to come down to the precinct, Clara. Because when we open that storage unit... we’re going to need you to identify what’s inside.”
